Another dust collector bagged this week-end. I'm in the middle of a purple patch right now. Two consecutive 74s in competitive play. Won my category last week, but this week, despite my best effort to screw up with two duffed pitches down the stretch, I managed to secure some silverware with a grand total of 38 points. And the difference? 29 putts this week over 34 the previous week. I changed my putting grip to cack handed and POW, the putts started falling.
Oh, back to the duffed pitches. I had birdied B2B par 5s 13 and 14 to get to level par with only 4 holes left to play. I hit what I thought was a good tee shot on par 3 15 only to come up a few yards short. I thought I had got a lucky break setting between 2 bunkers short, with a chip to a tight pin. Trying to be too cute, I caught it a tad heavy and watched in horror as my chip reached the edge of the green only to roll back down into a deep bunker. But it was sitting well, I splashed out to 12ft and then rolled in the bogey, phew!
And then on 17, playing 440 into a strong breeze, I pulled my approach left and again hit my chip a little heavy, again only to have the ball almost roll back to my feet, still leaving me a very hard shot. More determined I hit a good next shot to 5ft and holed it for another "get out of jail" bogey. So two duffs followed by 2 clutch putts! Emotional roller coaster, but I have to say my mental attitude is much better these days. Anyway I left it agonisingly in the jaws for a bird on 18, but given the way I had hit the ball I would have snapped up a 74.
And very bizarrely I switched my putting to cack handed after only 10 minutes on the practice green. It didn't seem too awkward at all to make the switch and I seemed to be getting a much better strike on the ball. I thought I would test it out for first nine holes. It held up fantastically well under pressure.
So I am now off 3.9, my lowest index in over 20 years!! Me and Kenny Perry, eh?
