Thread: More Power!!!

  1. More Power!!!

Right then chaps, how does this work? I can drive the ball about as well as most players I know nudging the 300 yard mark on a still day on a flat fairway, but when it comes to iron shots I am at least one club behind the low handicap players that I know.

My yardages for my irons are as follows: PW=110yds, 9=130, 8=140, 7=150, 6= 162, 5=175, 4=190 and 3=205. All these yardages are assuming a pure strike and without quite putting my back out (about 90% power as on my drives). My irons have standard lofts and lies as did all my previous sets which were the same.

What also makes me feel a bit sheepish is that I play off 7 while there are women out there who hit the same distances as me or less and are professionals.

  2. Bye the way, I'm not just being greedy here, it's just that long par 3's of about 220yards are a nightmare as a well struck 3 iron is 205 yards and a average 3 wood which is my next club down goes 255.

Either buy illegal irons and 3 wood to match the driver (), or buy a 5-wood/hybrid to fill the 205-225 gap.

The distances you list for irons are pretty average. Most people have to carry something to fill the 3-iron/3-wood gap.

Modern drivers do the work nowadays, but there is no hiding behind an iron.300 is a hell of a hit,so you have a swing,so the obvious answer is hit the irons harder! 300 yards is a hard hit,130 with a nine iron is only one club down on low handicappers, most hit 9s 140 ish and 8s 155,despite silly internet claims.Anyway,a staright 130 9 is better than a 145 hit left.

When do you ever get a "still day" in England, ffs ?!?
300 yards is some wapp. I'd love to see ya do it, considering you are 1 1/2 or 2 clubs shorter than I am....:sc:

Your irons are similar to mine, I'm maybe 1/2 a club ahead. I hit the ball about 250/260 off the tee and I feel that's plenty long. There's not many that are consistently ahead of me in my club. 300 is VERY long!

Remember Dave is right. Irons are not for distance, that's why you have a selection of them. More important to hit them straight!

And for your dilemma, get a 2 iron or 7 wood to fill the gap. Unless you are carrying 4 wedges you should have room.
Doctors say that you should eat 5 pieces of fruit or veg a day to remain healthy. Last week I ate 5 mouldy plums and that night I shat the bed. What's healthy about that?:shocked::shocked:

Yeah, a rescue ranger 14 or 16 degree in Taylor Made, or perhaps 15 degree in the new MD Golf 'Equaliser' - one that comes highly recommended by my good self.
MD Gold are a NI-based company and offer tremendous products at a mid-point price range. Check the guys out on www.mdgolf.co.uk The rescues that I speak of can be bought for 69 quid, and that comes with a Graphaloy Blue Prolaunch Hybrid as their stock shaft. Top notch.

If you hit a driver 300 then you should happily hit a 21* hybrid 220.Andy,I would jave thought 14,15 and 16 to be too strong a 300 yard hitter. If he can't get a 21* 7 wood or hybrid 220 then there is something wrong,ie the swing is different from the driver to the irons.

    eg I can get a ball 300 with run,off the screws,and i hit my 13* 250,and 21* hybrid 225.

Why do they have screws in your cart paths?

LOL, yes still days are in the minority, that's why I like courses lined with tall trees best. It seems that the club distances you talk of seem to be the standard for players in the range fo 0-5 h'cap. If I could just bridge the gap between me and them with the irons it would make a huge difference to my scores. I've got to admit that my average drive 2 years or so ago was 260 - 270 yards, but then I tweaked my swing plane a touch, bought an ex-demo Cobra SS driver and the confidence I have had off the tee since seems to have translated into an extra 30 yards. I played 18 holes at a very good course with well trimmed fairways 5 weeks ago and my shortest drive was 270-280 on the first hole, I knocked one 315 on the 17th which is about as good as I will ever get (no it wasn't down hill and down wind on concrete!!)

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm blushing a bit because it seems like I was just showing off about my driving, but I wasn't honest!!

From the way the American pro's play the game I was expecting the amateurs to be big hiters too and maybe have some tips, but it seems our friends over the water are staying a bit quiet on this one.

My confidence is admittedly poor with my 3 iron off the deck and slightly less so with my 4, so the thought of a 2 iron fills me with dread. I am slightly old fashioned as I see utility clubs and broom handle putters etc as a bit of a fiddle to the spirit of the game. But I was the same when they made metal headed woods so I will come round eventually no doubt. I suppose a good 5 wood will be the way to go, it will have to be a callaway though, anyone any reccomendations on specific model?

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

I think a 5-wood is your gap club. It's quite common to fill that gap.

Your irons are pretty average in length. Despite what anyone might say, the irons and woods react differently to the same swing. What sends a wood into orbit may be too sweeping to flush an iron.

    Good luck finding a 5-wood.

The old Steelhead Plus is a great fairway wood if you can find one. Should be pretty cheap as well.
