Hitting Fat Cure

Hi all

Tuesday in my first ever post here I mentioned in the Driving Range thread about hitting fat off mats and how hitting slightly fat is a constant battle for me.

I recently returned to golf after 16 years off. Been practicing daily and working with a pro. The major problem with my hitting fat is my weight shift to my right side on the backswing. My weight gets to the outside of right leg, I get a bit of sway and this contributes to the hitting fat problem. This is not going to be a quick fix, try as I might the weight shift issue is compounded by less than healthy body parts and old habits.

The good news is that I have found a key that helps immensely in getting back to the ball first and then the ground. Simple as it may seem, it really works for me, I just imagine that I am trying to make contact with the ground about and inch or two in front of the ball. Incredible, I am now hitting a 7 iron 150 yards and no more pounding my poor fingers to death by hitting fat. I have picked up about 15 yards per club.

The other thing that has helped is making sure I get my sternum behind the ball on the backswing, this keeps me out of the reverse pivot syndrome and gets me back to contact in a better position even with my lower body issues.
