This Weeks Tips....

I have been exchanging I.M.'s ( if you have Yahoo messenger, our ID is: indacup ) with a few customers and in the process they periodically ask me for tips and advice.

Last nite one of them (who's a member here) suggested I start a thread and periodically post some of them here...perhaps on a weekly basis?

So, I thought what the hell?

So I will start with three that we discussed this week......

1) Don't have shafting beads in the shop?
You can use granulated sugar instead.

2) Can't get those worn out spikes out of your golf shoes?

Get a baking dish and fill it about 3/4" with hot water...set your shoes in so the water level comes up to sole of your shoes.....let them sit there for about 3-5 minutes, THEN remove them with the std spike removal tool...they unscrew easily.

3) Looking to find the spine on your shafts but don't have a spine-finder?

Seal both ends of the shaft with masking tape...then drop then in a bathtub with water...within a couple minutes the shafts will rotate, spine facing the bottom.

Re: This Weeks Tips....

I wonder if you have gobs of tape on one end if it would mess up the outcome..... Interesting though.

My brother shafted his .370 heads with .355 shafts, and didn't have any shims.

Mixed his epoxy with fine playground sand, and his irons turned out great!

And once you find the spine, which way do you face it during the build?

Re: This Weeks Tips....

What does spining actually do though? Is it going to make that much of a difference in iron shafts or is it more of a graphite shaft deal? And lastly since my curiousity has been piqued, is it similar to what Golfsmith calls "pureing" which they charge an extra $5 (i think) for?

Jim-

I have seen (and been involved in) many debates about the value (or lack) of spine alignment.

There are a few theories/reasons behind doing it...

1) By aligning the shafts with the spine towards the target line it makes them play stiffer. We have tested the flex of shafts along the spine and 90* rotated and found a deflection at times up to 13* difference!

2) If done to all the shafts it makes them play consistent in feel and performance.

3) It creates a flat line Oscillation (FLO) that prevents the shaft from wobbling (see the link to a tour Taylor-Made driver that was not aligned properly), thus increasing the chance of solid contact.

www.indacupgolf.com/tmwobble.mov

Above I mentioned for many it's a "Theory" as to it's effectiveness...we did some testing a few years back with a handful of players testing spine aligned clubs vs non aligned.

Our results showed that with higher handicapped players displayed a very slight, but noticeable difference, while lower handicapped players performed much better.

The only real drawback is the cost varies from clubmaker to clubmaker...(we don't charge)...and yes, Puring is SST/HotStixx trademark name for pureing, and they DO charge $10.00 a shaft
