The advertisements intrigue me much more than the article....

I dusted off my Hogan book last week to refresh myself on some things and I've already started to turn things back around (it's been going pretty crappy for a while now). I don't recall this "secret" being in the book and I'm glad it isn't because I don't like it and, in fact, it was the first thing my pro "corrected" when I took my first lesson a couple years ago. I don't fight a hook, just the opposite actually, and so this V in the wrist was disastrous.

With that being said, this time last year I had gotten to a point where hooks were becoming my enemy but until I get back to that point I will continue to 'bow' the left wrist in an effort to get the face closed at impact.

Great article from 54 years ago. LOL!

If you fight a hook like I do, it'll definitely be worth a shot. I'll give it a go tomorrow for sure.

Hogan says in the article that the move will be disastrous for anyone that doesn't have the mechanics to hook a ball. If you fade already, this isn't for you.

My ballstriking is so bad right now, trying this out can't hurt all that much. It may even help.

    Thanks for the article Rory.

    Re: Hogan's secret?

he never gave away his secret in that article, it was all a bit of a con

depends who you believe re this, his caddie Jody Vasquez maintained he told him his secret was all in his right knee and how much to 'kick it' during his swing, ie he could control distance with his irons by simply moving his right knee more or less, and this was to within inches at 150 yards.

Others have said its his left thumb, he discovered that bending the thumb slightly shortened the back swing (how good do you have to be to discover that for petes sake?!!!)

others, including his friends, it was simply what was between his ears, others his dedication to training

whatever it was, I don't believe its relevant to anyone unless unless they

    a) practice as much as he did
    b) understand their swing as much as he did his
    c) totally grasp the miute details of mechanics to his level, ie this is impossible
    d) have as much natural talnet as he had , agian impossible

in short, his secret was irrelevant in my opinion, it was just the one thing amongst many things he could have claimed to be the secret, it just his favourite. I genuinely think it was his right knee, but as I say, no good to anyone apart from him

    Re: Hogan's secret?

His secret was most likely convincing everyone else that he had one.

I agree with that, and if he did have a secret I don't Hogan
would tell anyone. And from what I have learned everyone is different when learning how to swing.
When asked how to put back spin on a i7,
Trevino said how far do you hit it?
The guy said 120yds and Trevino said why do you want to back it up?

    Re: Hogan's secret?

he didn't need to convince anyone about anything after they stood behind him hitting balls

    Re: Hogan's secret?

I agree with that dave but, saying you have a "secret" will get eveyone wondering about what it is.

    Re: Hogan's secret?

He didn't say he had a secret, he was asked what his secret was, or what is the one thing he would say was 'the' secret to his ball striking, and he refused to answer, thats how the myth grew. His infamous answer was actually 'go an dig it out of the dirt yourself', which is probably what the supposed secret really was. Whatever you need, you can only get with hard work in this game.

  12. Re: Hogan's secret?

From a habitual hooker of the ball, this 'secret' worked wonders for my driving this weekend. Not quite fades every time, but just nice tight draws mixed in with some straight balls, and only a couple of fades.

It simply worked great with the driver.

Irons I am hoping will come around, but have given up on the 'secret' for the time being with the irons.

I have never been straighter over 3 rounds as I was Saturday, Sunday, and today. I'm really looking forward to playing tomorrow when my worst drives put me 4 feet into the rough.

    Re: Hogan's secret?

Ironically.. I've always hit fades with my irons, and my driver. My 3-wood is borderline slice at times, but a high cut is being gentle.

Last 3 weeks, I can't hardly buy a shot to go right of center. I can get some long/mid irons to tug a little right of center, but stay high and straight.

My 3-wood? Cranking it farther than I ever have, and I'm fighting a disgustingly nasty yank with it.

Hogan had a point I think, and it was to love it, and practice and find out what works for you.
