Thread: Not sure what is happening

  1. Not sure what is happening

Well, I'm not sure what is happening to my game but it is completely going to sh@t. Litterally!!!

I know my expectation levels are far too high for my skill level, but this time around I have no idea what is happening to my game right now.

Typically on a bad round I can hit too many errant tee shots, or my irons are off or the whole short game just leaves me. But right now I cannot even hit a slightly decent shot.

    Seriously!

I spent an hour at the range just the other day and I did not hit one good shot.

I started with wedges. Everything went off the hosel,,,EVERYTHING!!! :bang:

Than I decided to work on 8i's. If they weren't 60 yards right or left consecutively the came off the club screaming barely above the ground, carrying maybe 50 yards and rolling another 50ish.

Of about 40 mins. of the 8i I hit maybe three that were semi okay and those very rare ones travelled only 70% of their usual distance.

I was totally frustrated and for some reason I decided to give the driver a shot. Maybe the three best carried somewhere near 200yards and all the others were way off line and much shorter.

If I had to play that day I doubt I could put anything less than double the courses par on the scorecard, for real .

I have no idea what is going on, how the hell this happened, and even if this will leave problem will leave soon.

I am in serious, SERIOUS trouble!

Do you mean you have a good short game because you drive the ball 200yards?

Re: Not sure what is happening

    My advice:

    Put clubs in trunk
    Drive to nearest tallest bridge
Throw clubs over side of bridge
drive to local golf equipment store
    Buy all new stuffs

The only time I have ever been unable to hit a single decent shot out of an entire bucket of balls, was when I was trying to help the ball up into the air.

    Hit down, ball goes up.

    We all know it.

    We all forget it sometimes.

Re: Not sure what is happening

Honest answer, whenever my ball striking capabilities are lacking(almost all the time) i am not maintaining a proper spine angle through my swing. This happens a lot when i am trying to keep the driver low on the back swing to avoid coming over the top.

I move my spine angle and my striking suffers as a result. Try maintaining that spine angle during the swing and see if that helps.

Stop swinging around your waist. Sounds like you've gotten extremely shallow/flat. As usual, I must insert the disclaimer that I suck so take it for what it's worth.

Re: Not sure what is happening

Eliminate things one by one until all you have to think about is contact. Ball center of stance, use an alignment aid (shaft or whatever), get club face square with proper grip, don't think about draw or fade or anything, then shorten your backswing for a bit. Think about hitting little white ball before big green one.

  8. Re: Not sure what is happening

Stay behind the ball with your weight/center of gravity. If you are swaying and throwing your weight around you will have grief. Keep your head from moving around so much.

  9. Re: Not sure what is happening

I've been there all season - it's horrendous.

However, what I did to cure my woes was to go back to the beginning. Most of our problems start with a poor grip and/or posture. Check those, take a look at some vids (on Swing Academy/Youtube Swing vision) and compare your posture to them. Once you have settled that issue start looking at your take away and go stage by stage through your swing doing the same thing. Get in front of a mirror so you can actually see what you are doing.

I found my posture had got too upright and I was swinging too flat and round myself, all I could hit was hooks or high blocks and it was because my set up had gone off.

So my advice would be to take a look at everything in your swing step by step and just familiarise yourself with where you should be at each checkpoint.

    1. Set up
    2. Half way back
    3. At the top
    4. Half way down
    5. Impact
    6 Follow through

Then go and take a lesson

It helped me and I can't tell you how good it feels to be able to hit a decent ball again.

And good luck, cos I know how awful it is to be where you are.

Take a break from it. Going to the range already knowing your playing bad makes it 10 times worse.

  11. Re: Not sure what is happening

Grab your nearest 7 or 8 iron.
Start with 15 yard chips, take it back, cock the wrist just a little... pivot through firm left wrist decending blow.

After you are perfect with those, swing up to 9 and 3 on the finish. Finish a bucket hitting those. Don't leave until you strike them well. I have actually discovered that for me, a good drill here is to keep my feet together. Forces me to balance and there's no way I can help the ball in the air and maintain posture/balance

Finish on a positive note. Don't pull the driver out. No, not the 3 wood either. Not even a wedge.

    Just walk away.

Come back the next day and start with the chips, move to the 9/3 and when the striking/timing is good. Move from there to a 3/4 then finally a full swing.

I think the key here is to go back to a mini swing and work back into the full swing incrementally.

    YMMV.

    Loving that idea!

Great advice, but I am sure that this is not my problem. I wish it were that easy.

Sounds like a fairly generic offer!

    Process of elimination could work.

The way I've been swinging i'm lucky to hit either the ball or the earth.
