Today's Round

I haven't played golf in a month due to personal demands at home and cold weather. This morning, I woke up at 6:15 am and checked the Weather Channel: 36F/2C....projected to be 45F/7C by 9AM. It was a perfectly clear morning though with max sunshine.

I thought - "I need this".

So I go out there and sure enough three guys from the group are there. The greens did not freeze overnight so they told us in the pro shop to start whenever we wanted.

I hit a few balls at the range - on mats. We had a nice 10MPH breeze from the North and I was effing freezing. I bought a 2-pack of those chemical handwarmers and stuck one in each pocket of my down vest. I placed three of my new Callaway balls in these pockets.

We determined teams and teed off. I bogeyed the first six holes. Not terribly bad play but one sub-par shot per hole. Then, the wind died down and off the outer layer came, playing in a T-shirt, long sleeve shirt and wool sweater. I birdied #8 (a par 5) with a decent drive, good Sonartec 3 wood to 70 yards and nice Cleveland wedge to about 12 feet. Got a good read off two other players and drained a big breaker. Then I bogeyed nine but had a really nice bunker shot from a buried lie and almost drained the comebacker. We finished one-up on the front.

On the back, I shot three over. It got much warmer and now the sweater is gone - maximum sunshine! I drained a 15 footer for par on 13, a 25 footer for birdie on 14 and a 10 footer for par on 16....I felt more confident with the putter than I have in months - and the bentgrass greens are just lightening fast in the winter time. Putting absolutely firm and true. They just thrive in cold weather...

In any event - what a tonic for me. I never intended to play but went on a whim.

Sometimes a little Serendipity goes a long way...

Good round!

I played today as well, at the beast called Forest Hills. I showed up at 11AM, wearing my wool pants and the drizzle had just stopped. Still chilly at 40F and the sun never did come out here.

The course was practically empty and I played the entire front 9 without seeing another golfer. Shot a 42 on the front. Chance to break 90 for the first time!!!!!

Took a coffee break to defrost. Shouldn't have. Teamed up with a nice young guy who hits it a mile for the back 9. Tried to match his distance and ended up with a 49 for a total of 91.

Still, my best round ever. One day I will learn to swing under control.

Good play Bravo. Last time I played it was kinda cold too only I didn't do so well. I think I need some of those hand warmers.
