Luck of the Draw

Or should I say lack thereof? Also, to clarify my intentions, it's not about hitting a draw, as the more familiar and comfortable with my swing I get, the more I know my ideal one gives me a slight fade.

It's about the luck one may have when playing as a single, and getting paired up on a warm weather day. I got to the course just a little past noon, and there were a couple of foursomes yet to go. Handed my ticket to the starter, and saw that I was likely going to get paired up with a couple of kids. That's okay, I've played with teenagers before, some have been better than me.

Today was not my lucky day. The one kid sucked. I mean, really bad sucked. I don't know if on any single ball he got it to go more than 100 yards. Oh, wait, hole 9, he actually made some solid contact. Other than that, it was awful. A few times he picked his ball up. I tried to hurry these kids along some, but the one was so awful that no amount of hurrying was going to help.

I don't know, I think when we got to the back-9 and let a twosome (the two left from a foursome behind us on the front) go through, I should have parted ways with the kids then. But really, I had never gotten paired up with such a slow pairing.

It really sucked. I was often playing ready golf, but sometimes you can only do that so much and in favorable enough positions that you won't get hit by a reasonably decent swat by the kid.

Oh well. Got my first birdie of 2006. Hole 9, hit my 6-iron hole high, 8 feet left of the stick. Drained the putt. That was good.

Also made a nice shot on a fried-egg lie in a bunker at 18. Used the gap wedge to get it 3 feet from the hole, and sank the putt.

But the pace of the day really sucked.

lol
So the one hole he didn't slow you down you birdied. Just think what could've been had you not been paired.

What is bad about this situation is if you get rip roaring drunk to ease the pain of slow play, you feel like you are contributing to the delinquincy of a minor. Not that it would have stopped me.

Wow, I wasn't in too good a mood when I wrote the first post. That might be a record for number of times using the word sucked in a post.

I'm pretty boring and don't drink either, so I don't get that kind of relief either.

It's hard to say if I could have shot better, although after the first hole I was hoping it would get better because I felt good. I hit a good tee shot, then spanked a nice looking 6-iron onto the green. First time ever I've got on that hole in regulation, sadly enough. Two-putted for the par, too, first time snagging a par on the opening hole.

Shot 99 for the day. Oh well, at least I kept it under 100. That's pretty well my bad goal every round now, under 100 for 18 holes. I'm getting the hang of shooting in the 90's and am now working on getting down to the 80's.

That's a tough break.

A similar thing happened to me. I got teamed with a pair of high-school kids who were hacks. Nice kids, but hacks. They were very embarrassed about their games and clearly felt uncomfortable golfing with a stranger.

As it turned out, we fell behind the group ahead of us, and claiming time deadline, I asked if they minded if I played on ahead by myself. I think they were quite relieved to be on their own.
