Welcome aboard Sid!
FYI, there are alot of new golfers here, I don't know why exactly....it just worked out that way.

A set for you?

Are you looking for a whole bag? driver, fairway woods and irons?

If so, pretty much any of the sets avialble in the big box stores (Dicks, Sports authority, Walmart.....etc) will do fine to get you started.

After that, we'll need more information.

Howdy

I am one of the aforementioned new golfers, I got a used set of Wilsons off of the bay to get started. I am planning to get into a set of component clubs though, I am just not good enough yet to warrant spending more than that on a set of Irons. That and I have other costly hobbies as well, Astronomy and Sailing tend to eat disposable income with a real appetite.

I would agree with Sling, a discount store set of clubs will probably be the best route to go for your initial set. Wilson makes fine clubs at lower price points that are widely available as well as several other manufacturers including Dunlop and Top Flite. Learn the game with those clubs and get to know the game before investing in a higher dollar set.

Welcome to the wonderful world of golf .

Welcome aboard Sid. Great name by the way. Good advice from everyone so i will just add this. Do not get down on how you play. Golf is one of the toughest thing to get good at. Look at some of the best players and they Will all tell you that they don't have IT. So have fun and enjoy.

thanks to all who replied.
with all the reading i have been doing on golf clubs, i am getting information overload.

to be more specific i am looking at 7 clubs that have oversized heads;which when reading will be better for the first timers.

#3&5, hybrid, 5-9iron, wedge and putter.

thanks for your help

Putter-i would recommend this be your most careful investment. While i would reccommend a mallet putter with a higher moment of inertia, go to the local golf shop and see what style fits your eye, then look at other models of the same style from different companies until you find one that fits your style and budget. Ping makes a lot of good putters, as does Odyssey, and they can be found fairly cheap on eBay

Irons-I would recommend shopping for these next. Look for something with perimeter weighting and offset to help with mishits. Cleveland TA5's get great reviews, but other sets to check out would include TM 200/300 series, Adams Tight Lies/GT, Callaway Big Berthas/Steelhead X-12,24,16,18 sets, various Cobra offerings, as well as multiple Ping sets

Wedges-I would recommend carrying 2 of these, a higher lofted sand/lob wedge, as well as a gap wedge. Depending on the lofts of the irons you choose, the gap wedge should probably be 50-54* and the other should be 56-60* Cleveland 588 series and Titleist Vokeys are old standby's, but you might try to find ones that match your irons if youw ant forgiving wedges

Hybrids-These aren't for everybody, but i really like the TM Rescue Mid's. Try to demo some of these and see what works

FW Woods- Callaway makes a lot of clubs that have gotten rave reviews, and a lot of the TalyorMade and Cobra offerings have been well recieved, but Adams Tight Lies are also classics that perform

Drivers-Really a matter of personal preference. Just search to find one that fits your eye and demo them. I noticed you didnt even include a driver in your requests, but i think learning how to hit some of the older drivers before stepping up to a newer, oversized driver is beneficial, so take a look at some clubs like the TM 200 Steel and Callaway Steelheads/Warbirds, they are great clubs.

Hope this helps some
