J.B Holmes

He is getting ready to win this tourny by 7 shots in his 4th pro event! He can stripe it.

Yes, he can. And after watching his limited backswing and limited wrist cock, I don't know how.

I'll bet Cobra is going to sell a boatload of drivers, though.

Geeze. Wow. He doesn't swing like Daly, his swing is fairly compact and he just pounds it deep. If he can keep hitting it long and straight like that, he's going to win a lot. We're beginning to see the ripple effect of Tiger's arrival in 2006, we're probably going to see more young golfers who have working on perfecting repeatable swings that bomb it deep.

The only question might be is how well various body parts hold up with the increased strain of these swing speeds.

Anyhow, does this mean that Holmes will now get an invitation to this year's Masters? I can't remember if winning a PGA tourney guarantees a spot there, or when the cutoff date is.

I have watched golf for 40 years...I am going to stick my neck out here and say that I think we have seen the birth of a new superstar....certainly a new John Daly and perhaps - somebody who will challenge Tiger.

I watched three hours of that tourney yesterday rather than watching endless hours of pregame Super Bowl chatter. That dude is awesome.

At the end of the TV coverage, they showed his driving distances on a chart. His shortest drive was 300 and he bombed four over 350 - all the while hitting about 60% of his fairways. He hit driver, 8 iron to one par 5...on a 226 yard par 3 - he hit a 6 iron.

I mean, honestly much of his game is simply Driver, wedge, putt.

I think I recall that he is about 5'10" and weighs in at a hefty 180 lbs. This guy - honestly - just looks like an average joe physically.

And the swing....Completely different than Daly who goes so very far beyond horizontal. This guy never gets it close to horizontal...but from his top position, generates massive clubhead speed in a very very short timeframe.

I know there are quite a few long hitters out there on both sides of the Atlantic but from this side of the pond, look out for this guy...I think there is a new star on the scene....J.B. Holmes...

Holmes definitely has the talent. It seems like only a couple of things might stop him.

Obviously, Daly has incredible physical talent. His weakness has been keep his mental game focused due to his other difficulties. If Daly had the focus of Tiger Woods, I wonder how many wins Daly would have by now.

The other thing that worries me is that the swing has to be putting a lot of strain on some parts of his body. We don't know how well the body will be able to hold up. It's potentially a concern from what we've learned about heavy workloads put upon young pitching arms in baseball, it seems that a growing and developing body can be damaged significantly by too much repetitive stress.

I saw it, and still don't understand how he does it. Of course, I don't really understand how Fred Couples hits it so far either, when his swing looks so totally effortless.

now first off i didn't get to watch much, but what i did watch was very impressive. since everyone put such emphasis on his driving, i didn't really get to see him putt. hopefully someone did... obviously if you're winning a tournament by that margine then the flatstick is definitely going

but i remind you that he'll only be able to keep winning if he can consistantly putt from week to week otherwise throw him in the hooters trailer with daly, but i think daly dropped hooters, which is beside the point anyway

He was a solid putter and a great driver

The thing that I noticed as well was the wedge play, he did well with his wedges. I think he will be that next superstar that you guys are talking about, either that or a one year wonder, but I am inclined to the prior thought of fixture on the tour.

He hit a 300 yd. 3 wood on 18 (I think). Other than that it looked like driver/wedge on every hole. I wonder what he does with all those other clubs?

Actually, at the final hole Sunday, Holmes drilled his driver out about 354 yards.

thats true

354 and carried the fairway bunker that everyone else was shooting around or into. That was right after he saw that his dad had flown in for the final round and he still had his mind on the prize. Thats pretty good focus too.

I could do that, too. Of course, I'd have to restrict myself to a 1/4 backswing with a 3-wood to dial it down to 354 yards.
