Heavy putter? Light putter?

Which do you prefer and why?

definitely heavy putter. my putter was great for the longest time, then i started working out quite a bit, and the putter soon felt like it was missing the head, i had no feel for distance control at all, added lead tape and problem fixed, i'm once again sinking putts like a madman, and my once dreaded long putt problem has really improved. pics of it on my "2 questions" thread, i'm having trouble getting the link.

Depends on the green.

On my ghetto muni with shaggy greens I use a 33"/350 gram bullseye flange. I can give it a good whack & see where it goes.

On "normal" greens (8-10) I've got a 35"/330 gram putter with a milled face & on those lightning bentgrass greens I use a 35"/330 with a soft insert. Makes those delicate downhill things easier to roll slowly.

Heavier helps tempo, and makes it less likely that you'll get jerky.

'course, some of us can't help being jerky....

For me anything as heavy as a mallet is to heavy for me and seems to take away the "Feel" of being able to control the clubhead. A blade is to light. I use a flange. After cutting it down and using it for a couple years, I felt I need to add a little weight to the top of the shaft a couple weeks ago as posted on here. I played 3 rounds and it seems much better. I picked up a new grip and more tape to regrip it that way.

I would also concentrate on the grip and size of the head. These can drastically change the "felt" weight of the club. I've found that some of the newer huge club heads are actually lighter than the mallets, and some of the bigger, or differently designed grips will just as easily change your tempo in the same way as weight, without changing the adage of more strength, which is in fact what throws off my swing with the heavier club heads.

I prefer a heavy putter. I used a lighter one for a season and started leaving everything 4 feet short.

I went back to my heavier putter and now everything is back to normal...4 feet long.
