Question about putting

I read that a good way to help you line up a putt is to point the name or logo that is on the ball right at the hole. That way when you're looking down at it , you can keep your putter square easier etc.

My question is though, is it ok to put a marker down to spot your ball, pick it up and line it up, and put it back down how you want it?

I was watching the guys on TV yesterday, and the only one I noticed doing this was Villegas. (although it didn't seem to help him, he had a bad day putting)

I just wanted to make sure this was ok to do. I don't want people thinking I'm some kind of moron if I do this.

Thanks.

Yes. I do that all the time. Assuming you're on the green, of course.

I even go as far as to mark my balls with red line halfway around the ball. They have all been premarked with a sharpie. This helps me out (menatally atleast) when teeing off too, as well as making it identifiable immediately. Here's a little tip I still use that I read when I first started playing. On those short little nervy putts, picture a lane, like a bowling alley, leading straight into the cup. I rarely miss a straight putt inside of 6 ft. using this mental picture.
