Thread: HX Tour Black vs Pro-V1x

    HX Tour Black vs Pro-V1x

About four months ago, I switched from the Pro-V1x to the Callaway HX Tour Black ball. At first I really loved the Callaway and felt I could hit it farther than the Pro-V1x...

Now, despite hitting the ball really well in the past two rounds, I cannot get the Callaway to stop on the greens. Even with 9iron-Wedge, I cannot get it to stop and drop. It will always advance 5-10 feet.

Has anyone had this experience with this ball? Maybe I screwed up when I switched. I got two dozen for Christmas presents and am having second thoughts.

    I'll take 'em.

The ProV to me seems like a good ball, but not as long as the HX Tour in my experiences. As far as spin, I found the HX Blue (gawd rest his soul:( ) to be just as long as the HX Tour, maybe short 5 yards off the tee, yet the spin difference is really tremendous. The HX is supposed to be "the best of all worlds", but I find that it does lack a bit in the spin department in comparison to the Blues.

I know this may seem crazy, but consider the HX.56 if you'd like more spin. They're supposed to have a much more durable cover than it's predacessor which leads me to believe that they really could be the next best thing since sliced bread. Distance, spin, wind control and putting feel.

    Just my 2 cents.

  3. Have you ever actually felt the Tour/56 balls? They've got an unbelievably tacky feel. If you made an effort at it, you could probably put back-spin on a tee-shot.

I haven't compared the feel directly against a Pro-V1, but I can't see you being disappointed with the 56's anyway. I'm sure there's a canadian or two on this site who will buy them.

I felt I could hit the Callaway farther than the Titleist too. Seems to be the longest ball I have ever hit. I like the way it feels too.

The next time out, I am going to play both balls. I found a nice Pro-V1x on the course today and am going to play it half the time and half with the Callaway....the greens seem hard and are not receiving anyone's shots. So I need to take a more scientific approach before drawing a conclusion.

Unless you're consistently hitting the same shot over and over again (which it is pretty unlikely you are) you are not going to be able to judge which is further than the other.

HX TOur is a good ball, and a couple of my low h/cap mates switched to it for a while, but the fact is: it simply does not last.
It is a great ball for our v.windy links course, but it is pretty crap for when pitching round the green, imo. Feels far too 'clicky' off the clubface, imo.

Pro V1 lasts for an eternity, but as I spin the ball loads, I usually switch to the V1X. When there is little wind about this summer & the weather iss warm, you cannot beat the beautiful feel of the Pro V1 golf ball, imo, so I might well play it on those sorts of days.

Pro V1X lasts pretty well. Not as long as the Pro V1, mind, but much, MUCH longer than any of the Callaway balls....:sc:

No matter how good we get at it, golf always makes us strive to do better. In golf, as in life, there is no perfection, but we can always seek it. Golf constantly challenges us to aim farther, try harder, and be more than we are today. And really, what game could be better than that...?"

Tell the greenkeepers to get out on the course and start watering greens, God dammit !!

I think you are on target about much of this...After I played about 8-9 holes with an HX Black yesterday (washing the ball 3-4 times between holes) I noticed that it was a bit beat up...and I hadn't hit any paved paths or hardpan with it...

I may take a fresh dozen of the Callaways back to the shop where they were purchased and ask them to do an even swap for the Pro-v1x's and do a long term comparison....they are likely about the same. I think the greens are really hard this time of year despite plenty of rain, they are not holding anyone's shots too well.

I likely do not spin the ball as much as you do...therefore the Titleist may be a better choice for me...

The Pro V1 beats it to piss

    Bravo,

I'd advise you to try the new "dot" series before making your decision. They are way more durable and have an ultrawhite cover for 2006.

    HX.56
    HX.Tour

Maybe try trading in the HX Tours for the HX.Tours, although I'm guessing you might have trouble with that. Old stock for new.

From what I'm reading about the Dot series, they're really making believers out of even diehard ProV guys...

How do they compare from a price standpoint? I guess I could look it up but what do you know about this? Are the dots more expensive??

Golfsmith has them for the same price as the old ones. $39.99

I still like them but picked up a HX Black on the course last October and played three good rounds with the ball..maybe I am just a HO at heart but I found myself at the golf store the next time, getting a dozen of these...I guess I like all three but the U-Tri's are clearly a bargain...and the way work is going - I'll probably be switching to X'ed out used range balls anyway...
