What a difference a week makes

Last weekend, temps got up around 70 degrees on Saturday.

Today, I got up and it was 27, but started climbing fairly well up until the last hour. An hour ago it was 36, it's now dropped back to 35. I'm betting I'll be lucky if it gets up to 40 today, if at all.

But then, I should look on the bright side. The course shouldn't be too busy.

It's been the same way here, well almost the same.

Last week was 80s and a couple of days near 90 now it's rainy and maybe we're gonna hit 70. It may not even get out of the 60s today. Brrrrrrrrrrr.

Teed off at 9:50. It was 32*. OK, 31.7.

+1 through 4. Steady winds of 15-20 MPH. Gusts up to 30, maybe. All clean contact, ball direction virtually unaffected by the wind.

Wind helping, hit a perfect drive on 5, hardest hole on the course. Playing 430, and I have 150 to the green. So 270, right down the throat. For me, a massive drive, particularly when it's freezing outside.

Chunk the 7. Hosel rocket for the pitch, into a greenside bunker. 2 out of the bunker. 2 putt.

That'd be a triple.

Hey, lunch was good, anyway....

It was cold and windy today. Ugh. My short game was better, thank goodness, otherwise I may have never made it through.

But my putting was horrible, maybe in part because it looked like they sanded greens during the week. It was hard to judge how hard to roll the putts.

I have some pretty nasty windburn on my lips and nose. 27 holes yesterday was overdoing it a bit. The wind really sucked when I hit a slice into it. Once I figured it out, teed it up lower and further back in my stance, I was able to hit some nice low liners into the fairway. I struggled a bit with my distances. I airmailed the green on a 140yd. par 3 with a PW knockdown. That really surprised me as I was actually expecting it to land just barely on the front of the green.

40° isn't so bad, it's when that wind blows that it can get to feeling awful.

It is 34* with 15 mph winds up here. Supposed to get up to a balmy 42* and 15 mph winds in the afternoon, by the end of the round. I leave in 25 minutes. Golf makes you do insane things. I did raise my standards. It Used to be anything in the 20's or higher, after 5 years it now has to be a high in the 30's, or a wind chill in the 20's. Well, gotta go put my golf balls in my pocket so they are warm by the first tee.

At 34*, those aren't the balls I'd be worrying about.

64* but cloudy here today. 1:02 PM teetime at Applewood.

Hiya Doug. I'm in central NJ.

I didn't notice any frost. The sun was up, and the 31.7 reading was at home, with the thermometer in the shade. So maybe between the sun and the wind....

However, I have played that course when there was still snow on the ground. That day, I took a drop from a ball that landed in a snowbank in a trap.

And the grass on the course is still dormant. Not a whole lot of green around....

I did notice leaving (yeah, yeah, and fixing ) ball marks on the greens on several of my approaches. So the ground is not fully frozen.

It should be a bit easier, I think, out there today. Wind doesn't look so strong, the sun's good, it should get up towards the mid 40's here.

It wasn't really that bad yesterday, Hitch, but the wind was nippy. We walked, so it really wasn't so bad. I'da frozen in a cart, tho.

Good luck today.

Oh yeah, definitely walking helps keep you feeling warmer. Except of course those times when you have to walk directly into the teeth of the wind, and it begins nipping at your balls.
