Lessons

I'm curious about those of you that have taken lessons and your experiences. Specifically, were you at a range, or was it indoors? I've had lessons before on a range, and like the instant feedback you get by seeing the ball do what you want it to do. I'm a little hesitant to go for lessons at an indoor facility because you can't get this instant feedback.

The other reason I ask is that a Golf Galaxy just opened up near me and is offering 3 half hour lessons for $129, complete with video analysis that you can take home with you. I know the price is good, but I'm just concerned about the indoor lesson.

What do you think?

Glenn,

I own my own indoor golf facility in New York City. I think learning indoors can be very successful if done correctly and with the right teacher. To keep it short. I feel teaching indoors, students are a little more relaxed and not so worried about where the ball is going to go. Thus they can focus more on their technique, balance or a number of other things they might need to work on. I feel when the ball is added, students focus on the results of the ball rather than gearing their attention to the part of the swing their trying to improve.

A good swing will produce the same shot indoors or out. I believe you can get a better feel for your swing since the visual is gone.

But more importantly everyone learns a different way, give it a try and see how your feel. I would try to focus on one thing when working indoors at a time. Ideally, if your able to take a lesson indoors and go practice on your own outdoors you might find a balance you like or feel comfortable with.

Three lesson for $129 is not a bad deal. I would talk to the instructors and ask them how they would help you reach your goals? What's the game plan? You'll have a good feeling if you want to put your swing in their hands or not. Go with your gut. If they don't want to give you 15 minutes of their time to answer your questions, you have your answer.

Matthew

Thanks for the info Matthew. Thats pretty much what the pro said when I spoke with him. By the way, since you're from NYC, you'll know the location I am looking into....Paramus, NJ. They Golf Galaxy just opened up a new location there, about 1/4 of a mile from a Golfsmiths.

Again, thanks for the input.

I heard about it, but don't venture to Jersey to much. My place is in the Empire State Building.

Cool. I watched a show about dropping pennies off the Empire State building. Apparently, killing someone with one is a farce. But I digress...

I wouldn't hesitate to take an indoor lesson. Not in a second. The fundamentals are more important than what the ball does initially. You want to work on your basics before worrying why a grip change isn't providing you with that perfect 3 yard draw that everyone wants to have.

$130 bucks is decent, especially with the monitor giving you stats. I say snap it up and then take what you've learned to the range and hit about 50 buckets.

Yes, it was Mythbusters. It was pretty fascinating stuff. My favorite was when they rigged a pneumatic air nail gun to fire pennies out....and one of the hosts, stuck his hand under it.

You've gotta have balls to do that.
On a similar subject i recently wanted to get a better look at my mates trajectory with his driver I did this by lying down infront of him while he was driving and hoping to god he caught the ball right. I found that his ball flight is way too low for me to ever do this again.
