"The Swing Jacket"

I started playing Golf May 2005 and love the game....However like most new players I have a Slice that likes to seeks trees, lakes, and large fields.....The only way I can keep the ball straight is to use Vasoline...I don't want to do this anymore and play the correct way....Has anyone heard of the "Swing Jacket"??????Does it work?????I am afraid to buy it but it makes sense and has gotten good reviews......Thanks...

Save your money and take lessons.

It sounds like a broken record with this, but it's fundamentally the best decision you'll make. No training aid is going to get you beyond what actually going out there and hitting balls with an instructor helping you along, grooving your good points and tweaking your less desireable aspects.

Trust me, the swing jacket would be in the closet in three weeks.

Yep, lessons are the way to go.

For the most part, training aids aren't worth what you pay for them. Take the "Inside Approach" for example. It received Golf Digest's highest rating for training aids, and it sells for $60. However you could probably make one for less than $10.

I have the swing jacket. It's an excellent aid, especially for a slicer. It teaches you to keep your arms in, and to work in unison. It also teaches a one-plane swing, and teaches you to swing from the inside.

It is a great tool.

Get the book, 5 Lessons by Ben Hogan. Get a Swing Jacket. Practice for 3 weeks. Shoot 85. Simple game.

Get the Swing Jacket on Ebay. You can usually get them pretty cheap. You don't need to use it after a while once you are swinging from the inside. I still use mine each spring as over the winter my arms "forget" that they are supposed to stay in by my chest. The jacket
"reminds" them.

What the jacket WON'T do is teach the suppinated left wrist, or the "back with your shoulders, forward with your hips" and your arms "coming along for a free ride". THESE are taught by the book, 5 Lessons.

NONE of these are instinctual to the beginner, or even the intermediate player, and NEED to be TAUGHT. Get a lesson for $60 and HOPE the Pro touches on these (most won't) or buy the book (for $12 or less) and learn how to do these movements right out of the gate.

For a beginner, there is no better single training aid than the Swing Jacket in my opinion.

Suggestions

Im like you and im new to the game. I however started in August of 2005 so I missed the majority of the golf season and didnt get to play much at all. I spent all my time on a grass driving range and went to 2 Par-3 courses at the end of October before it started getting too cold. Still never played a full 18 yet .

The way I learned was watching videos ("8 Step Swing" by Jim Mclean),(Ernie Els video "How to Build a Classic Swing"), (Butch Harmons "Ultimate Golf"), and (David Leadbetters "Golfs Greatest Tips") I watched these videos religiously. Most of the time I would put it in before I went to bed and just try and understand the game because it is alot to take in for a beginner. I also got a subscription to Golf Digest and wrote up my booklet based on the tips I got from various sites, videos, and golf magazine articals that I bring with me to remind me how to swing certain clubs and how to approach certain lies.

If you are serious about your game I suggest you learn 1 club at a time. I used the pitching wedge for over 1 month until I got good with it and understood the mechanics. Then moved on to the 9 Iron which is probably the key club of all of them because it has "full swing" characteristics which is similar for all irons. After about 2 months with the 9 iron I move to an 8 and so on. It all depends on how fast you pick it up because I just started I had no bad habits so I made sure I understood exactly what I was going on in the swing before I started to practice it over and over. Its now near the end of March and I've been using my Driver close to 1 month now. I posted some videos of my swing in the pictures section of this forum.

My Golf Swing- criticism is welcome

Well hope this helps you some. Good Luck!
