My ex-Boss called me up yesterday out of the blue. I used to work with him in Edinburgh, great guy, great golfer.
This dude has a house on Islay (an island on the west coast of Scotland) and for years we have been trying to conceive a way to get from Islay to Portstewart (or vice versa) for a game. I hear that the Machrie links is nothing short of majestic. It is frustrasting that on a clear day one can see Islay from Portrush (estimating 30-40 miles).
My last investigations showed that it would cost £700 ($1.2K) to charter a flat rib for the day from Ballycastle to Port Douglas. Even if I was to get 10 lads together it is still a lot of wedge for travel, and then have to pay for green fees, drink and food. I am still trying to sweet-talk a acquitance of mine who owns a yacht to make that trip. I reckon that journey could be made for a bottle of Whsikey!
Anyway turns out that the Islay boys (a round dozen) have commandeered a fishing boat and it is leaving at 2am this Wednesday morning to make a 5 hour journey across the sea to Donegal. They are playing Greencastle on Wednesday and Ballyliffin on Thursday. Apparently these guys are all legendary drinkers, in fact cap crunchers! (iow they drink liberal amounts of Whiskey / Vodka, so much so that they unscrew the bottle cap, crunch it and throw it away, as the bottle gets finished in one session). You gotta imagine that little journey on a rough sea. I would also love to see the game at Greencastle. All steaming drunk teeing off with jelly legs and puke coming out their ears!! LOL
I am trying to get a game sorted for 3 of them in Portstewart on the Friday morning. Should be interesting. And if they arrive it shows it can be done, so I am going to try and make the return leg happen.
What a laugh that would be. Any volunteers?
