Who's on the BellSouth now?

One of Normans better designs I must say - He crucified amazing land at Doonbeg IMO - Could of made it great, but got too creative and forgot the point of design! Still good but not destined to EVER be great.

Oli outside bet for Augusta.

Cheers PF!

In nearly all of your 13 posts you have made commentary on course design (mostly negative) but you have not provided me, an American hacker, with any detail at all. You say something is either good or bad but never say why.

enlighten us.

Point 1: MSG boards are boring and tiresome when everyone agrees
Point 2: I direct some of my posts with a view to bring people in who may have something to add themselves - I always intend to interject there after (Top 5 being an example)
Point 3: I have a passion for course designs, I like to think I know what I like and what I believe a course should have for it to be considered a Great - In this instance Doonbeg is a newly designed modern day links course in Ireland, the land Greg had to work with was fantastic (perhaps the last great links land available in the UK?!). Having played the course I was deeply disappointed, why? FW's overlap, a couple of blind tee's, poor greens and poor stategic placing of bunkers. Other than this I guess it's tough to explain to people who haven't played a course.

Mckenzie, Colt, Braid, Ross - Top 4 designers EVER IMO.

Ross.....now we're getting somewhere.

I am fortunate to live on the east coast where there are 2 Ross courses and one gem that he didn't design but I think he had some small influence.

The first is the 9 hole course at Hotchkiss, a Seth Raynor design (1924ish). My grandfather taught there from 1936 -1970

http://www.hotchkiss.org/Athletics/GolfCourse.asp

Then there is Shennecossett in Groton, Connecticut. A Ross design built in 1898. I played that last year with another shot talker and plan to have another go this year.

Then there is....Yale, words fail so I'll leave it to you to look that one up.

I suppose the broader point is that if you want to make a claim one way or the other, try to leave a little meat on the bone so that those of us who are not in a position to know, can gain at least a little insight, no matter how small.
