Question I'm finally getting aroung to it

Every year I tell my self I'm going to learn golf. this year I have some time. So any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've been to a few websites on golf and am learning the basic rules etc. But someone tell me what task each club is used for? the driver and putter are pretty obvious. but how bout the others? can a wood be a driver? are woods and irons specific to the terrain? How many clubs in a kit? Yeh I know this might sound dumb. but I'm starting from scratch. thanks ya'll

Hi dougie, welcome aboard!

The first question that occurs to me is, "why?"
Why have you all of a sudden taken up the game? work? friends play? what?
Have you hit anything at all? got any range time in?

I ask so that I may know how best to answer your questions.

I work with some guys that playand talk to a few truck drivers that play.
theyall seem to like it a lot. i think they accidentally planted a seed. also I have friends in another city that play. sounds like a good reason to get together. plus I heard they serve beer in the clubhouse.

LMAO!

That's the best line I've heard all week!

Ok, long story, short....3 iron is good for 225 yards plus or minus. a 9 iron is good for 130 on a good day. so the higher the number the farther the shot should go....theoretically.

If you are interested, the very BEST thing you can do is go get some lessons. I cannot emphasize that enough! Start at a range and the range pro can get you pinted in the right direction much faster and better than any internet forum.

Get some lessons and let us know how you make out.

Yeah, I think you made a mistake, the higher the number of the club, the less distance you will hit.

Here's a basic run down for you:

Ok, so you know the driver is used from the tee. Basically other woods are used for very long shots.

Now irons. A low numbered iron like 3 or 4 is used for long shots also, then as the numbers get higher you use those clubs for shorter shots. Anything higher than a 7 is usually used to set yourself up on the green.

A 9 iron, pitching wedge (PW) and sand wedge (SW) are used when you are close to the green to chip the ball towards the hole.

And yeah, I guess you know what a putter is for.

You can do all the research you want, but I recommend you borrow or hire some clubs, or just go out with your friends and give it a go. That is the best way to get a feel for everything, and your friends will be able to help you out.

Also, I wouldn't be too worried about not being able to hit the ball very well, I still see some guys who have been playing for a few years that can hardly hit one good shot.
