And I thought football was a game of two halves...

OK, a wierd round alright to share with you folks

Teed off a bit later than I would have liked on Saturday but got a chance to warm up, hit a few wedges, putts etc. Nice day, a bit of breeze, but some heat (at last). I played the first 9 holes like a tour player. Most of the stuff was hot off the club, booming drives, crisp irons etc. (8 greens in GIR) - but the putter was a bit icy and I ended up going out in 37 (+1) with 3 putts failing to drop from inside 4 ft. Not bad strokes, just not falling. So I'm through the turn feeling great (having got the hard holes out of the way) and I'm at one with my swing.

Thereafter I proceeded to hit the ball like a clown missing every fairway on the back nine. It was as if someone pushed an eject button on my swing. But my irons were still good and my putter woke up. Didn't hole anything outside 4ft, but I didn't miss anything either and my approach putting and chipping were very good. So I also came back in 37 (+1) for a 74. A tale of two halves, playing both nines completely differently. I hit a poor blocked drive on 10 and then started to think about things. Thereafter I was blocking or hooking everything. Nothing too extreme or damaging but a whole new feeling. But the result was the same, I don't get it? Don't take this the wrong way, I'm delighted with the result so early on in the year, and the fact I really had to battle to hang on to my score giving the way I played the back side.

Anyway my shot of the day? Playing 17 into the wind, I missed the fairway and had to playing out of heavy rough to leave me about 80 yards to the hole. At this stage I was playing for a bogey but I managed to knock my wedge to about 1ft to save par. I was fairly happy with that.

And for my efforts? Not a sausage. I ended up 4th, outside the prizewinners circle!

unlucky mate, it happens to the best of us. It can also happen in reverse though. I was in the local scratch championship a few years ago after just having scraped in at the 7 handicap limit and proceeded to hack round the first 9 in 7 over while my partners were level and 1 over. Being a stroppy teenager at the time i promptly gave up trying and juts decided to try and get round without making a complete nob of myself. I shot 2 under on the back nine without even trying!

It's amazing how disastrous for a score high expectation can be.
