St.Andrews is *such* a good place. Real old, traditional Scottish town that is steeped in history. If you ain't already been there, get there !
What did you make of the New Course, Dave ? I played it at the end of last year there. Some good holes on it, but is rather bland, I did feel. Was exactly what I expected of it, right enough. Some of it reminds me greatly of some of the holes at Lytham.
Lol @ the playing the Road Hole comments. Would have to be done On the other hand, it would be nice to play it twice; once for doing that, theen another time for striking a long iron into 15 feet and rolling it in.. |
Howya Andy - yeah I remember chattin with IG about the Bushmills or is it Black Bush golf classic up yer part of town - anyplace I've played that's involved an overnight stay has resulted in a beerfest. Nearly sure that IG met his missus at the classic.
There's a certain something about the place, the history, the friendliness, there seemed to be a genuine helpfulness, from the owners of the guesthouse, to the staff in the bars/hotel and the stewards on course.
I definetely thought the Jubilee was both a better and a fairer test of golf than the New. There seemed to be a greater penalty for a shot slightly askew on the New - 3 yards off the fairway and yer in the gorse, fairway bunkers that were so small that you couldn't get a proper stance. We were playing a stableford comp, of my 5 birds, 2 came at #9 225 par 3 and #17 211 yards, both of which were riidicously high S.I's
Talking of #17, we walked across the fairway on our way to the jigger pub, and I tell ya Andy, I couldn't honestly visualise the shot that would get me home. As you say it's defo a long iron, if yer down the preferred righthand side I'd imagine yer looking at turning it over 20 yards, if yer down the left it's basically a swinging hook (which I think I saw Lyle play once).
Hope to get up to N.I later this year, if I stay overnight we'll have all the time and all the beer to discuss the finer points of St. Andrew#s .. cheers . hic
