Driver straight as arrow, iron slice

Already had some lessons, posted my swing video here (got great advice), and working on my game, with a lot of progress within the last 1.5 weeks.

If the Driver swing and irons swing is supposed to be the same, except for the plane being flater with Driver (due to length of shaft), why would my Driver send a shot beautifully straight and long, while my irons are still slicing?

Broke 90 for the 1st time ever (88) and I was having some drives up to 275, yes, 275 (with a roll), I couldn't believe it either, had to keep checking yardage on all holes (for me - that's a long drive).

First off, 275 is long for anyone. A common misconception is that Great golfers hit the ball long. If you look at the PGA Tour. There are probably about 15-20 guys who hit the 300 yard carry every time. Now they happen to be the ones winning the tournaments but a lot of those other guys are great great golfers and get about 275 out of their driver. It is soooooooo much harder to hit a straight drive than it is a long drive.

As for swinging irons and woods the same way..... I think that is hogwash. Hitting a driver and an iron are two totally different contact concepts. I work my irons left to right because I like it that way. I can hit the draw when I want to but the distance is way to inconsistant. Embrace the fade, use it. Learn your distances with it. Now if it is a severe slice then the fixes are usually simple. Shorten your backswing a little, keep your hands in front of the clubhead at impact and keep your right ELBOW tight to your body. My cousin watched my swing one day and after seeing me hit two drives he said, you could be a great golfer if you didn't chicken wing your right elbow. Best tip I ever got. Also, go to Golfdigest.com and watch the swing sequences they have. Whenever a fault creeps into my game I just watch about an hour of their swings and I figure out what it is. Good luck.

There is no reason why the swing with irons and the driver should be almost identical. The set-up will vary,in terms of weight distribution, position of hands, abll position, etc etc,but the swing will eb the same and it certainly will be the same plane. No way should you have 2 swings with different planes, this is why you are inconsistent. The swing may feel different,as stated in the above post, because the shaft of say a 9 iron is shorter and the decent is steeper,BUT,the plane will be identical in all good players.

Its the set-up that determines how good your strike is.I suspect something is out,for example, your shoulders may be open hence the slice. It could a million things. But don't for one minute think you need 13 swings for 13 clubs, you don't,you need fundamentally one swing and the experience to know how to set-up for each.

Try posting a video of you swinging your driver and another more recent vid of you swinging an iron this would help us see whats happening.

Agreed. The driver swing shouldn't be much like the iron swing.

You sweep the driver. You hit up on the ball off the tee.

You should be striking the ball with a descending blow with your irons.
