Does slope go this high?

http://www.missionhillsgroup.com/en/...n/default.aspx

Wow. Now that's a resort. The Norman course has a slope rating of 150. Holy feck!

155 is the highest. That course must be an absolute monster.

The review quote I read from a guy that went over there to play this specific course was "On every single teebox we said, Oh.....my....god."

I'd beleive it.

Rock, that Bear Mountain course on Vancouver Island I mentioned in the "Canadian Courses" thread has a slope of 149 from the backs.

Sounds tough to me.

S,

That is crazy. The ladies tees off the black are 155!

Man, that's insane. I would love to play off the tips at one of those, just to put me in my place.

Duh. I was looking through a couple scorecards and it dawned on me. Rating and slope are NOT the same. Stupid me! I'm thinking to myself.....155?....Dakota Dunes is 76.4....wow, it must be tough out West...

Idiot...

Average slope is 113, from what I read...so 155 is high, but actually not that uncommon for tougher tracks...

You learn things when you're stoopid...

Wow, thanks for clearing that up DouginGA, I thought all of you were talking about the difference in height from the highest to lowest point on the course.

LOL, and you thought you were stupid Rockford

My first thought was that it meant it was on the side of a mountain or something - you know, really steep slopes.

Slope=Rise/Run

Ok now I get it, sort of. I was wondering how I can post a score of 99 at my home course and my handicap goes down. Then I post a 91 at my old home course and it goes up. The slope rating is 13 higher at my new home course. So if a guy averages 95 on a 113 and I avg. 95 on the 129 I should kick his butt on a nuetral 113 course.

To add a little confusion to this thread:
I think you have to consider both rating and slope. rating is what a scratch golfer will shoot. slope is a factor applied to the rating that compensates for hackers. when the card says 68.2 / 119 that means that a scratch player scores 68.2 on avg. the 119 is a factor that adjusts for the bogey golfer.

course rating is the number of strokes a certain set of tees are expected to be played in by the upper-half scratch golfers. A USGA Course Rating of 74.8 means that 74.8 is expected to be the average score of the best 50-percent of rounds played by scratch golfers.
Slope rating is a number representing the relative difficulty of a course for bogey golfers compared to course rating.

Handicap is figured as (Score - Course Rating) x 113 / Slope Rating

My guess is that some holes might pose no problem for the scratch player but rip the bogeyman a new one. Others not so. For example two holes: one a 400 yard par 4, wide open no hazards. The scratch will par it in general and the bogeyman will bogey usually. This would put four on the rating and keep the slope at 113. Another par 4, 400 yards but with a water hazard to carry of 230 yards and the water continuing down the right might not do much to hurt the scratch player so he still averages par and the effect on the rating is still 4. But the bogeyman who might also tend to slice would on average do much worse so the effect might yield a slope of 130. Make sense?

Ko'olau Golf Course in Hawaii has a slope rating of 162. Their web site says that several of the pros have shot in the 80s there. I'd have to have a 2nd cart just to carry the extra balls I'd lose.
