LOL... Happy Gilmore is one of my favorite golf movies... the scene of Adam Sandler and Bob Barker in the Pro/Am is classic.

Richard Kiel is also one badass mofo... he started out in acting as 'Jaws' in a couple of James Bond films.

In the U.K. it's called a "fanny"

In the U.S. it is the frontal Unmentionable (pubic) region of the female anatomy.

I discovered this when my wife went ballistic on a guy whome she overheard saying (to his 4 year old daughter) "Behave or I'll give your fanny a paddeling you'll not soon forget".

I spent about an hour calming her down and giving her a crash-course in Australian-to-American translation.

Actually, 'fanny' means 'butt' here in the U.S. too...

I know of two Australian/American words that have totally different meanings... 'rooting' and 'stuffed'.

In the U.S. 'rooting' means 'cheering for the team', whereas in Australia, it's slang for f*c*ing... gives a whole new meaning to a 'rooter's bus'.

And 'stuffed' is slang for 'pregnant' in Aussie talk... and in the U.S. it means 'I can't eat another bite'... I had a friend visiting Australia that sat back in a crowded restaurant after a meal and announced that he was 'stuffed'... he got quite a few bizarre looks after that comment.

I reckon Fanny and Fag have to be the worst for confusion.

as mentioned fanny is a seldom used term over here for a ladies "front bottom" whereas the region it represents over the water is the posterior. Fag is an awful sounding term for a cigarette over here which seems to be being phased out due to the amount of American TV we seem to get and what it implies.

The dropped "I" from aluminIum irritates me a bit. Apparently it all came about because of a shipment of the stuff years ago that was incorrectly spelled/spelt(?). You would think that someone would have corrected that by now. One thing that has always confused me is how on earth the term "spelling bee" came into existence???

I'd be interested to know how your spellings came about, don't be offended here please but it seems like you have, should I say "simplified" or "dumbed down"? our language. E.g Tonight/tonite, Colour/color, Through/thru etc

G'day EG.

Tonite and thru are quasi-short-hand spellings, fit more for shopping lists and calendar entries. They are not considered proper spelling by any educated american. We dropped the "u"s because they were ignorant.

I was also going to mention "fag" as a personal favorite. As for Ausi slang, my favorite is the term "blurter" for ass.

Excuse me Crowe, but have you just come out on this forum? Each to his own I say.

Folk here would use that term, but it would usually be in its proper lengthened term; "faggot", ie. queer / homosexual.

Just when I say the word "queer", if my memory serves me correctly we, here, use it in the above sense, whereas Americans use it as an adjective to describe some strange occurance/thing. Am I right on that....??

(P.S. I am quite proud to have started a debate/topic that has lasted for so many posts ...apologies to the original thread-starter, though..)
