What do ya'll do?

Today, I was 5 ft off the green more than once and one time I chiped it, another I putted. So, I know that the smartest thing to do in most cases is putt, but what do ya'll do?

I chip

because I am better at it. Sad but true I have tried both on the practice green and I have determined my best chance is chipping.

If it's fairly level I chip with a 7 iron, if it's below the green I pitch with a 60 deg wedge or my pw depending on the lie.

From 5ft. off it depends on a lot of factors. If there is not a valid reason why I should not use a putter, then I putt. I am a decent chipper but I do whatever it takes to put that thing down in 2... and I don't want any drama on the 2nd one.

Mostly putt as it is the preferred and safest option on Links terrain. The grass is cut down more on a Links course, as oppsed to thicker grass types being evident in an inland/parkland track...

I have switched to putting lately, tho slope plays a big part of my choice. Downhill lie I almost always am putting, uphill may chip. Overcooked my approach yesterday on one hole and was about 10' off the green and about 3-4 foot above the hole on a steep slope. 25' from the hole. just a little tap to get it rolling and had a bird .
amount of green to work with also plays a factor. 5 foot off and 10' of green or less I am learning to always putt. The potential to really screw up chipping for me is too great, Putting can almost always leave a makeable putt.

I selected putt, with what I quoted in mind. Assuming I am not in the rough, and there is no obsticle between me and the green, the grass is fairly short and preferably leaning towards the cup, I will putt at even a further distance off the green. Although how far the entire shot is has some bearing as well, because I am more accurate with a chip on very long shots that really require belting the ball, even though I use the same setup on my lag putt as I do with a chip, with acception to placing the ball forward instead of back.

From 5' I'd almost always chip. That has more to do with the way our grass in cut than anything. If it was cut short and relatively smooth I would putt more often.

I all "putt" with the 7 iron, unless the fringe is good, then I'll just use the putter. If it is deep grass, I'll use the SW.

I have the same issue with "belting" putts. Once I have to actually bring the smaller muscles into play in order to speed up the stroke (now a swing) I start to lose distance control. I used to chip a lot more often and had a lot more chip in's to my credit. I'll gladly take 10 up and downs opposed that one herioc chip in now though. It only takes one bogey to negate that birdie.

I always chip even when inches from the green unless the pin is only a few feet away. I am good at chipping (reasonably) and I get it close (5 feet or less) most of the time chipping. Putting is pretty iffy with me....

From this distance I have five shots that I vary between depending on how far on the flag is or how the green slopes.
1 Putter
2 Flop
3 Hybrid
4 7 iron
5 Sand wedge bump n Run

I use either a 6 iron or 8 iron and use a putting swing.

6 iron - where there is not a lot of fringe to clear and you want mostly roll. With a putter swing, ball carries the fringe and rolls to the cup

8 iron - when you have a lot of fringe to carry. Again, use a putter swing, ball pops up over fringe, lands and rolls to cup.

I found trying to chip from that close, I'll either end up 1 foot from where I started, or 20 feet past the hole.

I just hope you don't have to use all 5 shots on the same chip!
