Just Finished Work....

...but before I left a guy came in to the Pro Shop and introduced himself as a member of the famous Winged Foot golf club. He really enjoyed playing our golf course, so invited me to come play there any time I happened to be in the States. I informed him of my friend who is at Westchester County Club, and so told him that I may well take the offer up with him some time soon.

This could be it, folks - finally I get to visit the U.S., take in NYC, hook up with one of my best friends (and wife!), eat Pancakes with eggs & maple syrup at a Diner, eat doughnuts off stalls in the heart of the City, check out the wonderful buildings, etc., and get to play at Winged Foot and other clubs.

What time of the year would be best to go, folks ? I am guessing that September time would be good. Would it be around 70/75 degrees then, or so ? What would be the best time coming from Ireland / N.I. ?

A.

Been to NYC in Sept. It's hot during the day (80-90) and cool at night.

Make sure you add Broadway to your list of to do's in NYC. That's the best attraction there IMO.

Broadway is where they have the shows, yeah >?

My sister went to see "Mamma Mia" there. NYC is also where she got proposed to - at the top of the Empire State Building

Andy:

The best time would be between the 4th week of September through the 3rd week of October.

Or 3rd week of May through 2nd week of June.

Sounds like a great trip. Would you like a yank guest along??

Hahah, I have heard that. Apparently a large sized coke in a cinema / movie theatre is like a bucket !

Are the doughnuts nice there, Dave...?

is there any specific reason that you chose those dates, Bravo ? Is it just that they are going to be right weather-wise....?

Yeah, it's one of these weird things right now that large has become equivalent to gargantuan.

I'm not a big guy, about 150 pounds soaking wet, and the portion sizes they serve at places are sometimes enough for me to get three meals from.

Bravo was defintely trying to save you, Andy, from the awful heat and humidty combo that frequently happens from mid-June to early September.

Those are great weather dates AND dates in which the courses will be in great shape.

Remember that the courses go dormant in the winter in New York and are closed. The grass really does not green up totally until mid-May and of course you want the best playing conditions you can get.

In late September to mid-October, you have beautiful weather with low humidity and the courses are still green as usually the first freeze has not yet come...

Mid-summer in New York can range from very comfortable to downright hot and humid, depending on when the weather fronts come through.

So if you have a lot of discretion concerning when you plan your trip, those late Spring and early Fall dates are ideal from a weather and course condition standpoint...

I will still love to come along....

Personally, I would opt for the 2-3rd week in October. The leaves are starting to turn, and NY, and NJ are beautiful in the fall. It is right around 70 at that time.

On the flip side, I wouldn't wait any longer and during golf there is a little downside at that time. The leaves are starting to fall, and you spend a little time cleaning house on the greens. Although Winged foot is probably fairly well kept for this problem.

Here are the daily averages. As Bravo said, the end of Sept is not bad temp wise either, but is not as pretty.
