Comp' signing in procedures

This has become a major pain in the arse at my old club. The signing in for the saturday comps occurs as follows: from 4:30 pm on fridays you must attend the club and take a number, from 5pm they go through the numbers and you pick your preferred tee time and can sign in one other member at any time.

Now for those who don't finish work until 5pm this means they get the dregs of the time slots or none at all. It get seven more ridiculous though, if you want to change your time or cancel you have to ring the one volunteer on his mobile phone and he will make the changes!

What is the best way of simplifying the way of signing in for competitions? The best answer will win the satisfaction of having it put into practice in a tiny club in England.

Random lottery draw among the entrants via a web page, tee time sign up via a web page in selected order. If you still want that clubby feel for the signup, have a lap top set up at the club for the members that are present there. Along with the lottery number, assign a time window in which you must make your selection. Miss the window and the next guy can pick a time slot so that you do not hold up the process.

Being at the forefront of technology as they are they now have a pocket calculator availiable or those struggling to add up their scores, but that's it as far as computation goes I'm afraid.

They used to just sneak the comp sheets up on friday evenings but people were signing in dozens of others in all the best times, then after a couple of weeks of scribbling out and amending it became illegible.

There's got to be a better way surely!

Wow EG, that seems a way convaluted way of doin things, we have a t/sheet which is posted on Saturday/Sunday for the following Sat/Sunday. You can sign in yerself plus 3 others for the 1 time slot. I know the early bird catches the worm, but our general teetime is 10.00 -11.00 and we don't have a problem. The committee members get first bags so you generally find 5-8 slots filled before the unwashed masses get their hands on it.

By the same token, Presidents Day is this Saturday, a list of qualifiers (made it!!) is posted, and they have the concept of a "Time Zone", so say time zone 1 is 7.00 - 8.30 time zone 2 is 8.30 - 10.00 etc. You put yerself in the particular zone you wish to play in, and then there's an open draw for playing partners.

Cancellations are handy enough also - cancelling prior to the day is a quick phone call to the club and a bottle of tippex - on the day of the comp your call is routed straight to the starters hut ... a "no show" is severely penalised, I think you get a yellow card from comp committee, then 2nd offence is a handicap/compy suspension and clothes pegs on yer nipples ... think there was only 2 people showed up for the wimmins compy last saturday

At my club, there is a signup sheet from about a week before the competition. You put your name down, in the time you want, and that is your time... No questions asked... Your mates will usually put their names down with you, probably at the same time.

There is a sign up, saying that you may only enter your name... Nobody elses. If you enter more than one name, you will be disqualified from the competition. In a major competition (e.g. club championship qualifier etc.) you might get fined...

Our system is:
Tee sheets go up 3 weeks before a comp, they are kept in the pro shop (with me) and players can enter them plus 2 others it is a good system and has worked for a while now, no shows get a 2 comp ban
cancellations have to be made the night before the comp before close of shop 7pm.
