I'm guilty of it myself - deep down I know that what I like to think is my 'average' is *actually* the top 35% of my driving distances, with all the snap-hooks, mishits and slices not included...
F**K it yer right Sandy .. my average good drive is 258 yards, if I feel that I haven't caught it solid I don't measure it ... yer tearing any credibility away here ... *sigh* ... my longest drive of 283 was from an elevated tee and downwind .. now ya happy ???

A little dose of humility and honesty were the catalysts for the biggest improvements I ever made in my own game, and suddenly my club selection improved and I wasn't missing greens by 10 or 15 yards because I'd hit my 7i that distance once before and was working on the principle I could do it at will once I'd done it once!

My own best ever drive was a 278yd 'monster', and was also from an elevated tee and onto a sloping fairway that helped it roll a long way out. If I'm honest my average drive is probably about 230yds, with it going up to 250 on a really good day. But that's the MODE average, not the MEDIAN or MEAN - the mean average would include all those duffs and be a good 30 or 40 yards less, the median somewhere around 210 I'd guess.

Ah, I used to love those old statistics classes!

The young kids coming up are hitting it pretty long. I played in a practice round for a tournament at LV Country Club with 3 jrs recently. The air there is dry and so carry was good, but the roll was nothing special. The 17 year old (tall but rail thin) consistently hit 320, the 14 year old was 270-290 and the 13 year old was maybe 10 yards behind him. And their drives went pretty straight, for the most part. These kids were in the top group of golfers in the west region.

LOL... yeah I agree completely ... knowing what iron ya could hit and should hit is potentially a 4/6 shot difference per round, humility and a drop in ego is defo the way forward ... lies, damn lies and statistics huh ?? ... but the truth is in there if yer prepared to look

One of the most reassuring things in golf is when you hit that shot.

Say for someone, a 7 iron from 160, and stick it right next to the pin. No more fooling oneself, and knowing your accomplishment. Not hitting it from 160 and putting it in the bunker short and right, even though the shot wasn't half bad.

Big deal you guys hitting 300+ yard drives.
I can hit a drive on the first hole, and land it near the green of the second hole.
