Help for an inconsistent swing?

hey everyone, im new on the forum and have been playing golf for a few years, but not very seriously until the last couple of months. I have an extremly inconsistent swing, about 1/3 of the time with my irons, i hit a low hook with not very much distance. But when I hit it good its real high and straight and usually can usually spin it some, but this is not consistent at all! I have a feeling that im not hitting enough down on the ball, but i really have no clue. So any tips for making solid contact more consitenly would be appreciated. If you want to know anything else about my swing that might help you understand my problems just ask. I look forward to learning from all of you. Thanks!

Not that I am an expert or anything like that, but I find a big thing with iron play is ball position within the feet. The easiest thing to do in my opinion would be to concentrate on ball position and alignment (feet, hips, shoulders, club face) and make sure those get squared away and go from there.

Have you considered lessons? These kind of fundamental swing issues are almost impossible to solve without working with you in person.

Try some lessons..

Yeah I've been thinking about getting lessons. I know that they will help a ton, but I figured I hold off for a little while, and see if there was any way I could figure it out and save some money. But that doesn't seem too likely. Thanks you two for the help.

I'm just a beginner, but from what I learned at my recent lesson, the contact tape is a great tool. Its just a little sticker thing you put on the clubface and it turns purple where the ball makes contact. This way, you can see that you are consistently doing the same error over and over. In my case, I was often hitting it with the toe and also hitting it thin. I worked on it to get the mark on the tape to be in the middle of the club face. I'm sure you can get it at a golf or sports store.

I`m certainly no expert, but my game has come on a ton since i started keeping my head down until i had swung through the ball, i was always guilty of looking up far to soon, and as a result, i had a poor range of iron shots, everywhere on the course.
So buddy, you don`t want to look up until you hit the ball, and try to keep your arms close together, also make sure that on the way up with the club, you have your hands hinged, good luck!!!

Absolutely speechless.

The guy hits the nail right on the head in great detail 95% of the time and gets criticized for doing so. So let's hear it, what is your wonderful, well thought out advice?

Cypress, I may not respond to all of your advice, but I would be a fool not to read it and take it under consideration, it is much appreciatted.

Maybe if he did not think it out and spoke in 1/2 sentences you would better understand.

I wish people like you weren't on the board for this very reason. CP has a lot of good info and is willing to share it. We should be thankful he takes the time to help us. I was hoping to come in here and see at least 30 lines because I have the same problem.

Amen. We have a forum where people ask for advice, and Cypress (and many others, including you Jayhawk) take the time to thoughtfully help others with this game we love.

Why is it that forums are always populated by those who find it necessary to criticize the good guys, and shout to the world, "I'm an idiot"?

"Yeah, but his answers are soooo long, and like, so, like, long and stuff...". Well, 19H, just like your radio has an on/off switch, your keyboard has buttons for moving on. Which may not be a bad idea.

speechless eh? seems like you talked a little in that thread, but that one probably only took a few minutes to proofread. you seem to try to portray yourself as intelligent, by going on for lines and lines about stuff that really nobody cares about.
i must admit cypress knows what hes on about, but i dont have the time to read through it all especially if i doesnt relate to my game.
this may make little sense, but quite frankley i dont care how i portray myself on an annonymous internet board.

I am not actually certain about what thread you are refering to because you did not link it, the one I linked simply gave 1 or 2 lines explaining the situation. So Thanks for the compliment! Maybe you one day will learn that giving specific examples on what you are refering, will help people identify what you are talking about in the end. Or maybe not.

I realize you do not have time to read through most of the posts on here because it is quite apparent you are too busy patting yourself on the back, which seems to be the entire just of your posting on this site. I understand this would be like rubbing you stomach and patting your head, and trying to think of nice compliments to post about yourself in the meantime.

I did take the time to read through all of your posts. In your 15 post history (16 if you count the one under a different name), you seemed to have made one possibly useful contribution, insulted a few members, apolgized for your prior user that insulted the intelligence of the people who run this forum, made a few one line jokes, and then spent the rest of your existence patting yourself on the back and trying to show what a great golfer you have become at the age of 13.

Not caring how your "portray yourself on an anonymous internet board" has left no question in my mind as to your individuality. Personally, with my conclusions based on my experience, I believe I am done with you.

My momma used to always tell me, "If you don't finish your peas, we're disowning you."

Wait...that's the wrong one..."If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all." Seriously dude, what's your problem? The guy is trying to help, if you can't read it all, skip it and keep it shut, I'm new here too, but I try to be smart enough to realize regardless of score, these guys still know more than I do.

Shoot, I shoot scratch, and my dad is in the 90s and he's the best coach I've ever had, and I respect every word he says. Just a little consideration is what I'm going for, I guess.

Oh yeah, back to topic, try slowing down your back swing and thinking smooth and consistant.

As far as specifically why, as stated before, can't really say without seeing you swing.
