This reminded me of another point that we've touched on in other threads. On Thursday, shooting a 26 on the front with 10 putts, this weakling hit 2 fairways and still shot a 26.

Again I reiterate my points that a) this tournament is bogus and b) the Tour isn't making it hard for these guys.

Call it sour grapes or eating crow, this record is bound to be equalled if the Tour sets up this easy for guys. Just wait and see.

good stuff, a nice win and a great 9 holes to pavin,

rock got what was coming to him, made some minor points about it being a cakewalk anyway, but all in a weak attempt to save face....

besides a good chuckle, the only thing i take from this thread is that it really doesn't matter how you're hitting the ball, if you're putting good, and doing all the small things well, how you do off the tee isn't relevant in your score. i don't know about you guys but i'm rethinking how much time i put into each area of practice

Many of the "shoulder tournaments" - those that occur immediately before/after a major suffer from weaker fields. There is nothing that tournament organizers can do about it...its just a timing issue. This is especially true for Milwaukee because it follows The Open Championship - where a player has to spend a 24 hours of travel time just to get from the UK to Milwaukee in time for the Wednesday pro-ams. On the other hand, the Atlanta PGA event has a strong field because it is the week before the Master's and only a two hour drive from Augusta. And there are decent participants at Harbour Town the following week because it is a short drive as well. Milwaukee's tournament has "one hand tied behind its back" in this regard..they will never have a extremely strong field despite it being a very well established event with a good history.

One other noteworthy accomplishment by Pavin - he tied the alltime PGA Tour 36 hole score of 125...so he goes in the record book twice in one tournament...until this is broken, he will have his name on this record as well.

I pose these questions:

"Who won the 2001 Buick Open?"

"Who finished 14th after shooting a 61 in the final round including 9 consecutive holes where he birdied 8 and eagled 1?"

I bet you more people can answer the former than the latter.

Shoulder tournaments and scoring records like this aren't that big a deal. When you crush the field by 10 strokes in the Masters, now that's memorable.

The fact that Pavin won is a bit of an anomoly. Most record or tying record feats come at crazy times in a tournament when they really mean nothing.

PS...the answers are 1)Mickelson and 2) Mayfair

Rock did Pavin steal your lunch money in High School or something? Seems like you have something against him.

He won teh tournament, it wasn't a stacked one, but a professional tournament nontheless. Let him hold the trophy without sh1tting all over his win.

Nope, nothing against the guy. In fact, if you look back, i've given nothing but props towards his win.

My stern face is towards his 9 hole record, which really means nothing. I predicted a fall on his face, which he went on to prove me wrong, which is fine.

However, I can stick 150 cigarettes in my mouth and still get the same amount of fame as a guy that shoots 26 on 9 holes.

Good on him for the win (as I've said). I'm just not that hyped over his 9 hole scoring. It just doesn't bring me to my feet. Had he finished -32 and beat the all time under par record for 72 holes, I would be impressed. Ernie still holds that record.

I'll leave it at that.

Rock, I think this goes back to my theory of everyone wanting to see the little man win and the big man die. (Almost) everyone is all pumped on Pavin - because generally speaking he isn't that good and one day he pulls the "miracle on grass". Had Tiger or Phil shot 26 on 9 I bet over half would take the stance of waiting for him to finish 48th just to grin and say "I told you so" as the trophy for the tournament was handed to some lesser-known. We are generally hypocrites.
