Dave Pelz on the Golf Channel

I've been having a horrible month putting and here this guy is on the golf channel academy talking about putting. He pushes the pendulum stroke which I happen to use. Man, talk about perfect timing. What do you think of his methods? It all seems to make sense to me anyhow.

I personally think Pelz is a nutcase and certifiable, but that's me.

He does, however, offer one good thing with all his toys and gadgets - GET OUT THERE AND PRACTICE!

Hitting balls on the putting green 3 nights a week is alot better than using funky balls or some sorta of contraption you hook onto your putter in my books.

But then again, I didn't work for NASA, so what do I know...

If your putter face is always square

to the target line, it would seem to me hard to argue against such a method. I use that method.

On the other hand, Ben Crenshaw and other great putters have that little arc in their stroke and do just fine, to say the least. They often say that they do not like having to get their eyes perfectly over the ball which is when the straight back-straight through stroke works best.

I do not believe that every one who worked for NASA has some special insight into any aspect of golf. Pelz somehow convinced a lot of people that he did have special insight. He even got Phil Mickelson to believe that he did. That business about 17 inches past the hole is the best speed to make the most putts is highly questionable to me. I know putts on some really fast greens that will only fall if you hit the hole. Miss the hole and you are off the green, so trying to be 17 inches past if you miss just isn't there. Up-hill putts, I want to hit the back of the cup. Down-hill putts, I want the ball to just roll over into the front of the cup. All side-hill putts are somewhere between these extremes, and I want to miss on the high side if I miss. Something about dwelling on a distance past the hole almost seems to be anti-confidence.

On television Pelz was demonstrating how to skim a ball across a lake. On the basis of that alone, I think I agree with the Nut Case assessment. I would certainly be careful about agreeing with all that Pelz has to say. A lot of it is common sense more than anything requiring space science.

Sincerely, Cypressperch

All interesting comments. I also watched a show on Golf Channel where they were "fitting" the putters by changing the lie etc. Have any of you done that?

One of the things I had done at Dana's 2 weeks ago. I'll try to post some video of that putting fitting session, if you promise you won't make fun of me.

When I lived in Houston I dated a girl that worked for NASA and she didn't know anything about golf. Well that's not quite true, she knew a bit about shafts but that was it.
