Experts on here

Clearly there are a few people on here who really know their stuff in many different areas relating to this wonderful/hellish (changes frequently) game. I'd be interested to know who the masses consider to be the authorities on the different topics.

I've been quite taken aback by the knowledge that many of you have on shafts for example. I'll admit that although I have played for 20 years to a reasonable-ish level and I know a bit about clubs, I know nothing about shafts beyond whether it is stiff or firm.

Clubhead materials clearly has one extremely knowledgeable expert in the shape of WBL.

Have we any experts on greenkeeping and muscle mechanics of the swing? If I knew what muscles to exercise most I might one day think about exercising them .

Many of you are Ebay experts (ManchesterGolfer for example makes a killing from buying and selling clubs on there in his free time).

We've got at least one professional on here (and many who think they should be) so he should be good for swing advice.

There's a clear expert on the female perspective (kind of by default though LOL).

Have I missed anything?

As I have come to respect what many of you say (many but not all I hasten to add!), I would be inclined to believe whoever you say are the people to turn to in each category.

Hey it was a long time ago, I was in college, and I needed the money.

I would say I most often turn to R35 for advice on just about everything golf related. Then again, maybe that's why I play like shite

Seriously though, I think just about everyone makes valuable contributions to the site.

I am definitely not an expert in anything golf-related. I've just pretty much dealt with every problem there is to deal with. I went from hitting slices 2 fairways over to pull hooking into a school parking lot. I enjoy messing around with different equipment and I am always working on a new shot. I've figured out a lot of things by trial and error. Now when I play with less experienced players I can pick up little things they do wrong and could do to improve. On the same token when I play with good players I always watch very carefully. For instance, whether Nsherman knows it or not, I have his driver swing recorded in my brain. It's pretty much the opposite of my old, slice producing, out to in and waaay to steep swing.

of all the swings in the world to think of, why mine? It's horrible. I don't get it. When my friend took me out to play golf for the first time like 4 years ago, he had me hold the club with his grip, which sucked. It stuck. So now i have a horrible grip. I was playing yesterday and played through a pro giving lessons to 2 people. After i bombed one over the dogleg, the instructor showed my grip to the 2 women and said look at how his V's point to his shoulders. I wanted to scream at him, but i wasnt quite so embarassed because its a 380 yard hole and i only had 45 left in. Anyway, my golf game is a combination of mistakes that's starting to work well (Im playing off of 4 right now), but i would highly recommend against trying to do anything the way i do it. Maybe chipping, but definitely not anything else

Lol... I don't think I could ever hit those towering draws with an 8.5 but your plane is way closer to a golf swing than what I had going on. You'll see next time we get out, my swing plane is now a virtual mirror image of what I was doing before. Unfortunately last time we played I was still stuck between the two. Remember those 5woods I hit on the 2nd hole at Foster? I hit driver-PW like that now.

Cypressperch has given me some tips that have really helped, swing related. He gave me a couple of drills that have assisted in developing a good takeaway and tempo.

EG:

I will tell you one 'bizarre' tip that both IrishGolfer and I use...we learned it from a guy at GR about two years ago. It works wonders for me.

The Assclench.

The Assclench is a name that IG and I gave to this technique after learning about it and using it. It actually originated with Steve Elkington in one of his books about golf.

The concept of the Assclench is to somewhat tense the muscles in your lower back at address and as you bring the club back to the top. Then proceed downward as you normally do by driving the knees forward toward the target....allowing the shoulders, arms and hands to flow freely through the ball.

Mastering the Assclench allows you to create maximum coil...with coil being defined as the differential of your hip turn vs your shoulder turn at the top. The greater the differential between you hip turn (which should be as little as possible) and the shoulder turn (which should be as great as possible) - the more coil is created and more power.

Basically as you address the ball, your lower body feels very firm and you actually have tension in your lower back and inside your thighs (Hogan talked about this). Whilst at the same time, your upper body and grip and are very relaxed. As you take the club back, you are insuring that your hips continue to face forward (perpendicular to the target line) and turn as little as possible while your shoulders are making a very very big turn. Again, once you get to the top, you start downward by driving the knees toward the target while dropping your club into the slot so that you approach the ball from a strong inside path.

It works, I tell you it really works and when I really focus on it (as I have the past few rounds) my power is really increased as well as accuracy.

You will see the concept of coil in the Hogan book with the ovals in one of the middle chapters. The Assclench helps you get there...
