Urgent help

Guys can you help me here - I've been rightly stiffed. Played in Captain's Day on Saturday in the last group - the long drive competition was held on a dog leg hole. The leading drive was straight up the fairway to the corner of the dogleg and lay at the farthest point of the fairway just short of the rough. I proceeded to hit a drive with a draw around the dogleg with my ball 30 yards to the left of the leading drive, down the left side of the fairway. My playing partners who reached my drive before me congratulated me on beating the longest drive, put my name on the sheet and moved the flag to where my ball resided.

The guy I beat (club champion and an absolute a*sehole), doorstepped me in the clubhouse to say that he had gone out to collect the long drive flag and that I hadn't beaten him, that his drive was longer even tho mine was nearer the green. At this point, my playing partners told him that apart from mine being nearer it was also a longer drive. Heel of the hunt - prize giving due for 9 o'clock was delayed starting and I left at 10.15. Went up last night to collect my prizes (also won the leading qualifier), to find that this fella had been awarded the long drive prize.

I was absolutely fakin fuming, as I wasn't even given the courtesy as to the reason they awarded it to him. I spoke with my buddy the head greenkeeper who told me he'd contact the pro this morning. The pro has just rang me to tell me that it's a travesty and to lodge a letter of complaint to the management committee meeting tonight. He states that the yardage on the hole is calculated to the middle of the fairway and that my drive should have be assessed to the middle of the dogleg and then the distance around the dogleg.

I'm gonna send a letter just wondering how to word it, rather than going off on a rant like I am here. It's not the prize at this stage as he was presented with it on the night, I could care less - but I know hand on heart it's rightly mine and there has to be some respect afforded this injustice.

Thanks

Dave

Simply quote that the club pro confirms that "the yardage on the hole is calculated to the middle of the fairway and that my drive should have be assessed to the middle of the dogleg and then the distance around the dogleg."

Then..."please explain why, as my drive was closest to the green, it did not qualify as 'longest drive' given the official methodology for measuring hole length on golf courses".

Then, if that brings no satisfaction, smack the muthas. You're Irish, you must know some lads who have done a bit of knee-capping.

How about "Dear **** *******, Your ****** **** **** club champion is a ****,****, **** ******,****,****. If you back him, you are a ****, *****,**** **** bag. Give me my ******* prize you ****."

That would about sum it up. It is a shame to hear that you even have to deal with a guy like that. It is a shame the Pro is not fighting this battle for you, as how his club acts reflects on him as well. Good luck!!!

Actually insisting that they remeasure the hole and reaccess the measurement based on whatever criteria they used to score the drive may not be a bad start. Maybe they will realize that it is not restructuring their course to cater to one member. That as well as they would then need to change the slope and rating of the course to reflect that they really do not count those as doglegs.

Cheers FKA and thanks for the support ... I think the Pro will support me, it's just that I need to kick start the process with a letter of complaint ... tho I really don't wanna muddy the waters for the sake of an ashtray for a prize - but sometimes you gotta stand up for the principle of the whole thing .. thanks

State the facts.
Then write how dissatisfied you were. But don't let pride get the most of you.

Howya Dave

Club golf politics, eh? CAnnae beat it.

I think KA's advice is good. I also think you need to say that you took advice from the pro and your playing partners, and that you may be forced to take legal advice should the committee not provide a full and open explanation as to how they reached their decision, and that you would formally like to appeal that decision.

The club champion has only his word, you have that of your playing partners and backing from the club pro. He could have exagerated where his drive ended up (as it was not marked - you had moved the marker to your own drive). When he went out later on and checked, who was to say that he was right on his own, did he bring a club official to adjudicate? Who made the decision or was it made only on his say-so.

I would also include that you were very upset not to have been consulted as to this decision at the time and not asked for your input.

Outside that I am not sure what else you can do.

On the contrary. Getting recognition for great achievement can be very rewarding.
But if ever you reach a point where this scandal just eats up your life, maybe you should reassess the situation.
In your heart, you know you're the best, and that's what counts. But, that's a different buddhist philosophy.

I think that's all you can do Dave and I hope it works out for ya. If nothing else everyone will know what a jerk your club champ is & that you know what was done to you. You can take some satisfaction in that at least.

Remember, gasoline and matches cure all ailments.

I think a calmly written letter or even showing in person to the chair would suffice. More than likely, they'll award you something just to calm the waters.

But be sure to have an "August 12th Captain's Day Long Drive Champion" shirt and hat made up, just to settle the score with that arsehole.

Keep us informed.

You've said it all in your signature. A guy like that has some serious ego issues and is not worth the time. You and your partners know you hit not only a longer but a much better placed drive. Maybe the "club champ" can't even hit a draw. Does he have this honor by virtue of winning with a scratch cap or does he carry one?
