Woods Vs. Mickleson

So i just read the article posted on this site that Dave Pelz stated that at his best Phil Mickleson is better than anybody. Does anybody actually believe that? I mean seriously are we supposed to believe the 3 time major winner is better than 11 time major winner Woods? Or is this just an attempt to pump up his boy Mickelson. My take on that is that it will do more harm than good as Tiger will bristle at that amd tear up Phil.

Any thoughts?

This is exactly why I think Pelz is a babbling idiot.

Tiger, at his best, is untouchable. As much as I don't like him, he's a great golfer.

Maybe PHAIL Mickelson is better when practicing - or under no pressure on the range, that is debatable. However, in a pressure rich tournament situation (which is all that really matters) NO WAY! I'm one of the best range players here - but that hasn't seemed to win me jack crap.

Some observations:

Michelson is a great chipper and putter, one of the best with the flat-stick when on form. Secondly he has the ability to go low, as he plays a high risk, high reward game. He can shoot the lights on when on a roll.

Both these attributes rely on form and luck/chance. This is why he will never be a patch on Woods, who can perform more consistently withour either.

Hefty has shown glimpses of brilliance, especially over the last few seasons, but he lacks consistency and sometimes gameplan.

I think the best way to measure these two is who would win if both of them were playing terribly. My vote would be Woods every time.

Exactly. If Phil is off he loses everytime but Tiger can be less than 100% and still pull off a win. It's why he has 50 of them.

Both are very talented but that was a dumb thing for Pelz to say.

Actually, talent-wise, I think they are pretty even up. However, Tiger wins the physical and mental games with ease. So, no. Both on their best games, Phil gets beat. Probably badly.

I do, however, think that Pelz is a rocket scientist.

Phil did put a 59 on the card, so he's got that going for him, which is nice. However, my money's on Tiger.

I have always thought that some

golfers, Phil and Davis Love come to mind first, are so fearful of Tiger that they almost give him wins at times. There are some (Ernie, Retief, Chris Demarco, and especially Jim Furyk) who seem to relish the idea of locking horns with Tiger. They respect Tiger's ability (you have to!), but true competitors jump at the chance for such challenges. Of course, the better they play, the better Tiger is going to play since he is also into such challenges.

For us mortals there is a lesson here. You will never reach your potential playing against people you can always beat. OK, I know we have a handicap system, but it just isn't the same as going head to head with someone and the winner is the one with the fewest strokes. Going by handicap, we got people here that somehow shoot in the sixties all the time. You cannot beat these guys when they can use their handicaps.

Sincerely, Cypressperch

When I first started back playing golf about ten years ago, I worked a deal with the head pro at the course I belonged to. He would let me hit all the range balls I wanted as well as give me one lesson a week if I would help keep the range picked up. After the first time I broke 80, he told me that he would not be giving me any more lessons and my range priviledges would be cancelled if I didn't start playing with the "wild bunch" on Sat and Sun mornings. These were some of the better golfers at that club. He told me, "you'll only get better now if you have to play better." It was great advice.

Pelz has been smoking too much of Bill Murray's Kentucky Bluegrass hybrid.

I guess the best display of how good Tiger is in my mind was the British Open, I mean seriously he hit driver once! He played most of his approach shots from over 200 yds and the only one that gave him any kind of scare was Dimarco, who has guts by the way.

"I am not a Pelz fan, I bought his first book the "short game Bible'' and it screwed my game up big time. He is just way to technical for me....anyway i cant wait to see the PGA and Tiger and Phil paired together.

Whilst I admire both as very very good golfers, would you see Tiger loose the US Open if he were in the same position as Phil a couple of months back?

Doubt it!!

I think when it comes to raw talent; most of the top 20 out there (bar a couple of individuals) are probably within a few shots of each other.

Luke Donald is an amazingly straight hitter, David Howell is simply an amazingly consistent putter, but as said above, the Tour be it PGA or European is as much a mental game as it is a talent game, and I think that is where Tiger has quite an edge at the moment.

Pelz may be a good golfer, but he has to master but one thing...

Think, before you talk.
