GIR - Greens in Regulation

Hi folks, another post from sweden.I played a round yesterday and a turnament today (which i won )I always write down a kind of statistics, (gir, number puts per hole etc.) and yesterday AND also today my greens in regulation were just shait!!! Yesterday 6 today 5 and I still managed to play a 8 resp. 9 over par. So i am kind of satisfied, especially if i consider i had 31 puts today, but also very angry with my gir. I think if you want to go on really low hcp, the gri shall at least be between 13 -16 would not you agree.SO what do i learn from this - practise, practise practise So long folks

This is sort of the heart of alot of debate here.

GIR seems overrated these days, as you have proved with your win. I'm on the side of the fence that believes that rough should be long and gnarly, totally unforgiving.

I was watching the PGA yesterday for a bit, and a commentator's comments caught me and made me shake my head.

"Oh, I think Tiger caught a break there, as his ball bounced into the sand trap instead of the long grass. So now he'll be able to put spin on the ball with his approach."

Huh?

Aren't bunkers supposed to be "Hazards?"

Shouldn't someone that hit their ball into a "hazard" be penalized in some way?

Should a "hazard" be relief from the "long grass".

How about "Wow, now he's in the bunker. With that tall front lip, he's coming out of there horizontal being that he's right at the front. At least in the grass he could advance it up the fairway with an 8 iron, but now he's looking at a lateral move here, Jim..."

This is going to be a big step but the next one I need to take in my game. I am currently down to 11.7 and singles are possible with the game I'm playing now. To get to low singles I will need to hit a lot more greens to start and then start making some putts or never worse than 2. My pph is 1.8 but due to chipping it close after missing the green. I don't have a stat for PPGIR but I know it at least a 2.2. I only 3 putt when I either hit a gir or an approach that hits in over gir for the most part. I managed a best ever 79 last month but I chipped in twice. I guess what I see from my perspective is there is lot more to just hitting more GIR and lowering scores. There is a big transition from constantly saving pars and bogies with chipping to making 2putt pars and dropping a few for birdies.

This is a little decieving, I think you will probably find if you hit 13-16 greens, your putting would likely be considerably higher. Right now I average around 28-29 putts, and consider myself a decent putter, although I only average about 3 GIR's. I would likely say my low putting average is more reliant on my lack of GIR's and decent chipping. My Average putts on GIR is just barely under 2 (1.98), so I think that may be the more important thing to track if you find GIR's important and still track putting. I think if I hit 13-16 GIR's that would probably put my putting up to about 34-35. Then again, if I were good enough to hit 13-16 Greens, that would likely mean I would face shorter putts on a GIR than I currently face because of accuracy, so I guess it would likely be lower as my GIR putting average would drop for shorter putts.

Here is a link that gives the averages of alot of these stats based on handicap. My 3 GIR's is in fact the average for my handicap. A scratch golfer only averages 12, and Tiger only averages 14, so 13-16 may be a little optimistic.

Great link PA. Most of my stats are in the 9 cap area. The two that are above are GIR and pars. Not by much though. I saved that page offline for reference since getting to a 9 is my short term goal.

I average about twenty eight to thirty a round, but I generally hit about 15 greens a round, but thats an average. One round I shot even, had 22 but only a few greens.

I guess its all just how your day goes.
