Are you a lefty or a righty

Also, if you are a righty, then is your right shoulder coming over instead of under in your downswing. If this is so, bend your knees a bit more and try to lead the swing with your knees, as the his can cause the above stated.

The only thing, is that it is hard to give a good answer without seeing your swing.

So you're a slicer.

The following are possible causes of a slice:

1. Clubface is open at impact.
2. Clubhead path is coming in from the outside, and cuts across the back of the ball. This tendency is most pronounced with the long shaft of a driver.

Your slice may be caused by one, the other, or both.

Put a ball on a tee. Put the driver behind the ball so that the face is square to a target in front of the ball.

o | where o is the ball, and l is the face of the club. This is square.

Now if you're a lefty, here is a text illustration for how the face would be open:

o \ where o is the ball and \ is the clubface coming in open for a lefty golfer.

Fix this? We haven't even established if that's the source of your slice.

Probably the best advice for you presently is that you seek some qualified instruction for somebody who can actually see your swing, your grip, and your alignment. If you don't want to do that, and prefer to learn on your own, there are some good books that are worth looking at to help you understand the fundamentals of a golf swing. That's what you need to learn now, the fundamentals so you can understand what causes the ball to go in the directions it can go.

Many, myself included, feel the book Ben Hogan's Five Lessons is an excellent resource. It's not all that long of a book, but it is packed with a lot of information that becomes more apparent as the book is read, and applied, and read again, and applied again.

Lefty - The ball slices (curves) left because you are putting counterclockwise spin on the ball when you hit it. The ball goes left because the clubface is open on contact. If the open clubface were the only problem the ball would simply go straight left. The spin comes from the club "wiping" across the ball as it makes contact - think english on a cue ball.

Slicing is the most common problem new golfers face. The good thing is that it is usually easy to fix. Here are two easy tips as a place to start.

1. The next time you are at the range try "strengthening" your grip. This doesn't mean holding the club tighter, it means turning your hands slighty on the club toward your left shoulder. Hit a lot of balls like that and see what results you get.

2. Make sure that when you start the club back on your backswing that it goes back straight for the first foot or so, on your downswing concentrate on swinging from inside out. Draw an imaginary line between the ball and your target. On the downswing try to keep the clubhead from going outside that line. Try to swing the club down that line and finish with a complete follow through. Hit lots of balls.

Best tip - don't swing so friggen' hard. Save that for after you cure the slice. Think smooooooth.
