Pulling the Trigger

I was hitting a few at the range earlier and was having a bit of trouble with the 4wood and driver. I began taking the club back a bit slower and smoother and then triggering the downswing with my hips. It seemed to be working well, "straightened" out my pulls, which has been my major problem lately. Is this the correct way to trigger the downswing and should I let my hips take the lead?
