Wrist Q

Should i consciously be doing anything with my hands when swing my driver? i don't with my irons, and hit them pretty long and straight. my driver i slice all over the place. i keep hearing everyone talk about "rolling over" the hands. what exactly is this, and does not doing it cause a slice? also, would bending my left arm a bit and lifting the driver as i take it away instead of sweeping it cause a slice?

Not "rolling over" your hands does cause a slice as the clubface never gets closed through impact.

Keep your left arm straight. Everyone always says not to "lock it out" and a "little bend is okay", but from the slo-mo vids of the pros, they most all lock it out.

The less moving parts, the less that can go wrong.

Your hands should roll over through impact naturally due to momentum. If they don't, you are applying forces to STOP the rolling over. Either "holding on" or too tight of grip pressure can cause this.

To get an exagerated feel of this, hold your club with your normal grip. Leave the clubhead on the ground and rotate the club so your right hand (for a rightie) faces away from your body. The lines on the clubface should now be 90* "open" and parallel to your target line.

Now, still leaving the club in contact with the ground, ROTATE the club so that your LEFT palm faces away from your body. Do you see how your right hand has "rolled over" your left? In doing so, you see the clubface go from 90* open, to square, to 90* closed.

This is an exageration of what your hands, and clubface, SHOULD be doing through impact. Though it SHOULD happen with no real concious effort. And it will if you relax your wrists and forearms and let the club "swing".

Now you'll end up hooking the piss out of the ball and come back asking how to cure your hook.

Danielson, I have become rather unconvinced about this roll-over action. After years of trying to do just that and tending to slip into duff hooks, I have given the idea away. I now hold the wrist square at impact and pronate after impact, in a hinge action. It works great for me, it gives me a slight fade and I can get the ball high with all clubs.

However, your problem may be completey different. It could be just a timing issue. If you work through your action in slow motion, you can see what happens to the club face as you do different actions. For example, if you bring your hips through to early, you will find the club face tends to be wide open as it contacts the ball. Trying to roll over with the wrist won't fix that. There are a lot of other possible causes. You simply have to analyse each possible action of your swing to see what is responsible for the slice.

Ask someone to look at your swing, preferably a pro. That could save you a lot of pain on the golf course.

Good luck.
