Golf Channel?!?!?!?

OK we all know that early round coverage is heading to the Golf Channel along with some full events. I do not have the Golf Channel now and to go up to the next package of Channels is like $20-$30 a month. Is it worth it to buy the Golf Channel, Of course i get like 15-20 other channels but i dont watch a whole lot of TV anyway. Anybody have strong feelings on the GOlf Channel, is it alot of Infomercials?

By itself, I don't think it's worth 20 to 30 a month. If the other channels offer things of interest, then you might be okay. And it's all dependent as well on how much disposable income you have to play with.

To me though, I wouldn't pay 20 to 30 for just one channel more.

I agree with RBB. During the day there are a lot of infomercials on TGC. At night, though, there's usually pretty good coverage of tourneys and some instructional shows.

I like shows like Playing Lessons from the Pros, (where you follow a pro during a practice round), and Personal Lessons (a pro takes two players out and tries to improve their game. And you can't forget the Big Break.

I agree with the responses so far.. its a good channel, I used to watch it when I lived with my parents. But there are a good number of infomercials throughout the day, and I dont think it would be worth the extra $20-$30.

Unless $20-$30 could be easily scrounged up. If you can afford to spend it, youll probably enjoy the channel. But it would be best to find some shows on the other new channels too. That way you can feel your getting your money out of it.

Good luck on your decision.

I get virtually every channel available in the U.S. through DirecTV, including the Golf Channel.

Frankly, I don't watch it much. My dominant reason for viewing golf on TV is to watch tournaments and these are carried on the major networks. TGC will carry some Champions/seniors events from time to time and sometimes will show European events (which I DO enjoy).

I ignore the Golf Channel instructional segments the same way I ignore lessons in magazines. I think it can really screw with your head...instruction is meant to be taught in person.

In this regard, I wouldn't pay 20-30 more a month just for TGC...you aren't missing much unless you are a real addict...

TGC is in the same part of my package that NFL network is in, so its a pretty simple choice for me.

I have Dish Network, the channel itself isnt 20-30, but in order to get the channel i need to go up to the next package. It isnt worth it to get just the golf channel, but i would miss some of the early round coverage, you know like the Majors. How am i supposed to watch early round coverage of the Majors?!?!?!?

Big Jim:

Early round coverage of the majors is not shown on the Golf Channel. It is typically shown on TNT which is included in most cable and satellite standard packages..

The Masters was on USA this year, which is no longer doing golf. The US OPen was done by ESPN, which is no longer doing golf. The British and PGA were done by TNT so I'm good there.... I have pretty much decided not to get it anyway as its just not worth it after looking at the other channels i would get along with the GOlf Channel. Wish I could buy just one channel...

I'm quite surprised TGC isn't included in Dish Network where Directv it is.

Directv USED to be that way. All those extra channels aren't worth it. 90% of the shit you'd want to watch is blacked out. I'm VERY glad DTV changed their policy and added TGC to the standard package.

That said, next year there will be a LOT more coverage on TGC. Including Saturday and Sunday full event coverage.

You STILL have no worries about the MAJORS. Here is the TGC schedule for next year, 2007:

http://www.thegolfchannel.com/core.aspx?page=20135

The Mercedes, the Sony and the Bob Hope are ONLY on the TGC next year. If you don't have it, your golf watching season won't start until the Buick Jan 27th and 28th.

The last 7 events are also only on TGC. Granted, Tiger and Phil won't be playing these as they are up against Football, but the "quest for the card" as the PGA Tour calls it is still good golf to watch.

The BEST show on TGC is the Sprint Post-Game show. If you like a LOT of coverage each night of the majors, there's nothing better to watch. The Sprint Pre-Game Show is nice also when Major coverage doesn't start until like 11AM or so.

On the post-game show they replay the interviews with the top guys and offer pretty good analysis of the day's goings-on.

After the US Open's final round, they had Frank Nobilo go out with a camera and show you exactly what Phil was up against. He also went out and re-created Ogilvy's pitch on 18. Nobilo put it to 3 feet from the same spot. I guess it wasn't that hard if a Pro with no warmup and a suit on can hit the same shot from the same spot about 45 minutes later.

I love the Post-game show.

Then there's the Big Break VI: Trump National coming up next week I think.

Plus, if you like any kind of Nationwide, or European coverage, there is absolutely no other place to get it. When Tiger plays overseas, you get to watch it LIVE late at night, or early morning.

I would lobby Dish network to change their ways. Tell them you're going to switch to DTV. Start a grassroots campaign to petition them to change. I WANT MY TGC!

Augster:

Thanks for your post. I did not know that TGC was going to start carrying Tour events next year. So this was news to me.

This is one of the great things about ST - I learn new things all the time here...
