If I were just starting out and knew what I know now about scoring, I would start by learning how to putt really well, then chip really well, and work my way "backwards" until I got to the tee box hitting driver.

I know that sounds terribly boring but I promise you, putting, chipping, and then pitching the ball accurately is way more important to low golf scores than just trying to rip it off the tee.

Find as many Golf Digest as possible and read "Breaking 100 sections".

keep your elbows close together in your backswing and your downswing.

learn the proper grip, then relax it.

NEVER take your eye from the ball untill it has left your club head.

take lessons.

Consider getting a lesson or two. Investing a bit of money so as to learn the fundamentals of grip, alignment, and what the swing should be doing can potentially save you some heartache and prevent the development of bad habits. There are some people who are capable of learning on their own, but even for those time may have well been saved by some lessons early on.

It can be quite astonishing, watching the guys on the PGA, then going to a nearby course and seeing some of the swings that people have taught themselves. I've seen some which would have required the exquisite timing of a concert pianist to even have a faint hope of striking the ball solidly.

Watch "Playing Lessons" on the Golf Channel. Seeing how quickly pros like Brad Faxon and Raymond Floyd can spot swing flaws & how well they know the game is mind-boggling.

Find a good pro and take a series of four or five lessons. It's the best money you'll spend on this game. I wish I had done it a lot sooner.

not only take lessons, but do what your pro tells you, alot of times it feels wierd and you hit worse, but once you correctly do what he tells you, your swing will be great.
