I've never maintained that better balls increase distance. I do, however, beleive that higher end balls are straighter and easier to control. They also putt much nicer and have better feel around the greens.Originally Posted by Loop
I use HX Tour 56's at $50 a dozen because I lose about 6 balls a year at most. Should I be recommending these to a guy that loses 6 per round? According to this data and my feelings on the ball itself, yes, I should. But that make no financial sense. You MAY see an increase in distance, but is it worth $500 a year in golf balls? I doubt it.
I've seen with my own eyes guys play better INSTANTLY with the use of a higher end ball. I won't be swung using data gathered from the BEST players on the planet. I'd rather use average joe and self gathered data and go from there.

To me, around the green is more important. I often play the HVC soft feel because it is great around the greens. There are a ton of balls I can definitely get a few more yards off the tee with. I really could care less about 276 vs. 271 off the tee, however the feel of the ball off my 54* will definitely save me 2 or 3 strokes per round. I've experimented with a lot a different balls, I've found the Pinnacle Exception and HX hot to be the longest but the HX sucks around the green. The Exception is closer but still not soft enough for my liking.

Here's a couple, and even these are wide. Notice the ZERO forgiveness trees left and right off the teebox out of the shoot.

I find that tighter fairways make me concentrate on my swing more and I usually hit a better shot. With wide fairways I tend to swing way to hard because of all the open space.

man...i'm moving to canada...what a great looking place.
interesting read. thing is higher end balls are meant for all aspects of the game rather than just driving...i'm assuming when you swing that hard....the marshmallows on the clubface too much killing distance....say you were to go to a top flite rock at that swing speed they were talking of like 180-something, it would compress about as much as any high end ball at say 115 and just never come down
