rules question

whilst playing in a golf competition recently, my opponent was using a laser scope or "pinfinder" to calculate the exact yardages to the green. He stated that the R & A golf rules now allow this, since golf courses have 150 yard markers anyway. Are they now permitted. If so I might well get one!

R & A golf rules now allow this... at the discretion of local course rules.

So no, not allowed on every course.

I don't know about R&A but the USGA has allowed them for non tournament play.

I played with a "sky caddie" guy a couple of weeks ago and that thing is sweeeeet!

Here's your answer...

Decision 14-3/0.5 in the 2006-2007 Decisions on the Rules of Golf enables a Committee to introduce a Local Rule permitting golfers to use a distance measuring device to obtain distance information during a round. Without such a Local Rule, the use of such a distance measuring device is a breach of Rule 14-3, the penalty for which is disqualification.

At all the amatuer tournaments here in New Mexico they allow them, they just cant judge height difference or wind, which is stupid because how can they enforce that

GPS gives us yardages, plus or minus a gnats ass, and most of us can't hit a club consistently better than +/- 10 yards. But hey - If you have an extra couple of hundred and all the clubs you need, why not.

Also notice it says "... that measures distance only". Regardless of local rules allowing range finders, the ones that calculate adjusted distance based on terrain slope, like the high model pinseeker are illegal if you use that function.
