Thread: What is your goto club????

    What is your goto club????

If you need to hit the fairway or your driver is playing up a bit which club do you turn to? A hybrid, 3 wood, 2iron?

I'm currently on the search for my perfect goto club. I have tried a number of 2 irons the best of which has been a Callaway X tour. I have kept this in the bag as it is really good into the wind and when I'm swinging well I love it, but when I'm struggling with my driver i struggle to hit a 2 iron so it's not a goto club for me. I have also tried utility irons like the Cleveland LDi and the Nike version there not bad but fly way to high for my liking, I'm not a fan of the hybrid clubs in genral. My latest attempt was a Sonartec 2.5 3 wood nice club but I don't like the low profile of modern fairway woods it's a good club but not my goto club. I got to thinking when I was a junior i used a 2 wood and loved. It was a John letters wooden headed with steel shaft it didn't go very far but went straight as an arrow. I then decided to go and search ebay for a 2 wood. There aren't any 2 woods as such made anymore that i can find anyway. So I searched for an 11 or more degree driver with stiff shaft. Not a common combanation then I stumbled across this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1 a Makser TW-72 driver with 11.5 degrees of loft & stiff shaft. I took the plunge and got it for a mear £20 plus postage. I have never heard of Makser though so don't know if this was a bargain or not. I suppose if it turns out to be my answer for my goto club then it will be.

Anyway back to my original point what is your goto club from the tee when the driver is playing up a bit or your swing isn't quite in the groove?
It's a 1st run FTi - Tour Issue he says.

I have a 9 wood that is straight and 165 yds it has got my butt out of trouble a few times..

AND NO I'm not a girl
When asked how to put back spin on a i7,
Trevino said how far do you hit it?
The guy said 120yds and Trevino said why do you want to back it up?

  5. 4Wood on a long hole, 5iron on less than 360-370. I used to use the hybrid a lot till it turned into a hooker on me.

  6. if i can, i'll punch my driver with a 3/4 swing. closing the clubface and purposefully going inside out counteracts the fade that is common with laying off the driver.

    Six Iron

My Six Iron will fly it 180 plus yards from tees and draw high 165 to 175 yards from FWs.
When I'm trailing on skins match bets then I refrain from using woods and long irons and connect with Six or Seven irons.
Six iron's my best balance between accuracy and distance from tees.

To actually answer the posed question, I would draw on my Three Wood from the tees.
On average, goes further, in play, than my One Wood does.
But ahhhhhh, when my driver connects solid, it does fill my heart with such glee as then I'll say,
"Miche Wie has nuthin' on me!"
Then the next few drives will remind me as I look for my ball in the trees.

I'll give this one a try. I've been trying to get that shot down since I started playing without much luck. I can get it with a 4W but tough to control with the driver. I'd like to be able to just hit a borderline "wormburner on purpose" .

  12. For me it is the 5W. Goes only around 230, but can hit it dead straight if needs be, and slight draw/fade on short dog-leg par 4s.

  13. I have said this before, and I am sticking

with it. If the shot calls for a driver, then a driver it must be. The shot determines what club to go to. Hitting the driver is so important that if one cannot hit it at all, they should be on the range learning how to hit it.

OK, lets say that you just cannot hit a driver at all. Then do not carry one in the bag until you can, but realize that you have a very big hole in your game and it needs to be filled. Whatever club you have the least fear of, use that club. I say "least fear" rather than the "most confidence" because it seems that you may be basing your choices on fear rather than confidence. Anyone can be in a slump, so I would think the way to go would be to step up there with the driver and attempt the shot giving your very best thinking to what might be the problem before addressing the ball.

    Sincerely, Cypressperch

  14. If I'm playing a tight fairway I'll opt for my #3 iron or #5 wood off the tee.

This is obviously going to affect shorter hitters a lot more. When you can hit a 5iron draw out to 210 dead center and a 4wood nearly 250 it becomes less of an issue. The driver is a big risk/reward for me. For examle if a par 4 is dead on 400yds. I can go Driver-SW or GW, 4W-7 or 8i or I can just about garuntee a fairway and play 5i-6i. The risk of hitting a driver into rough or trees is too great on most days.
