    Byron Nelson, RIP...

Byron Nelson, one of the greatest golfers in the history of the game, died today at 94.

Known as "Lord Byron," Nelson won 18 tournaments in 1945 alone, including 11in a row in what remains a record year.

    RIP.

He will definitely be missed. The 11 tourney win streak is one of the greatest records in professional sports (right up there with Joe D's 56 game hit streak). :(

  4. Bummer.....Hit em straight up there Lord Nelson.

No kidding. That's just incredible. No wonder they named a tournament after him.

    A true great,a sad loss.

But his 11 in a row was when all the big guns of the day were at war,Nelson was sent home on medical grounds. He really didn't have anyone to beat in those 11 truth be told.

  7. a true dominating force in his time.im sure 11 in a row will last a veryy long time.

    RIP LORD BYRON.

  8. IN MEMORIAM:

I've been lurking around for a little lately and simply haven't found any posts that required my input, until now.

As a Texan, there are 2 mainstays in golf lore: Byron Nelson and Lee Trevino. The loss of this great player, teacher and philanthropist is a deep one indeed. His career as a player is one of legend, and his swing was so sweet that in an age when players swings seem so mechanical, a machine was made to emulate him. The EDS Byron Nelson is definitely one of my top 5 yearly tournaments (along with the Colonial, Masters, US Open, Shell Houston Open and Valero Texas Open; told you I was a Texan). Although he hasn't hit ceremonial opening tee shot in years, he will be sorely missed in Dallas every spring.

I conclusion, let me just say that someone like Lord Byron doesn't really die, he just goes somewhere else to play.

Damn, tho, just think. He saw every great golfer from Jones to Tiger, and played against a ton of them. That's pretty cool.

And he has a signature first name. How many Byrons do you know?

RIP, "Father of the modern golf swing."

  12. I also heard and read of what a fine, godly and upright man he was too!
Not many celebrities fit into that category!!

    For you Mr. Nelson:

"When the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there!"

You know you've reached an unobtainable level when the friggin' machine used for testing golf clubs, balls, shafts and clubheads is named after you because your swing was so bloody repeatable.

That, in itself, encapsulates "Iron Byron".
