    The Greatest Game Ever Played

I know this has been posted previously...I think by IG.

After reading a post about this fantastic book, I got a used copy on Amazon for $4. I have been reading it now for a couple of weeks. And frankly, rather that wanting to read it as fast as possible, taking only a few pages a day, right before bed.

The author Mark Frost did a superb job of writing the book and it reads like a fine novel. Even non-golfers would enjoy this book about the rise of modern golf and the emergence of the first great stars from the UK and US. It provides great historical background for students of the game and explains the very early Open Championships, who won them and how the competition was organized and staged.

And ultimately the book is the story of the 1913 US Open and the great Harry Vardon, his close friend Ted Ray and the emergence of Francis Ouimet and other American players.

For $4 - you will not find a better, more entertaining book and it will educate you on the rise of golf at the same time....

Yeah funny you should mention it Bravo ... IG was (droning) chatting about it last Thursday when we met .. just wondering whether to take the easy way out and watch the film instead ...
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

  4. No read the book, a lot of interesting historical stuff in there that I am sure the movie would miss. If you like golf you will love this. Vardon and Ted Ray are fantastic characters, as was indeed yound Quimet.

Haven't seen the movie yet but it is by Disney, so it probably has some elephants and a cute dog in there somewhere.
Doctors say that you should eat 5 pieces of fruit or veg a day to remain healthy. Last week I ate 5 mouldy plums and that night I shat the bed. What's healthy about that?:shocked::shocked:

After I finish the book, I am going to rent the movie...

The book is so beautifully written. It is a fine piece of literature in its depth and descriptions.

Thanks again for the recommendation. Its the last thing I will read tonight before bed.

Tomorrow begins the club Championship...I need to read Harry Vardon saying...."Never despair".

  6. Haven't read the book, but plan to after seeing the DVD. Be sure to get the DVD because it's got some great extra features that cover many features that we're dealt with in the movie.

Read the book, get the DVD. Don't bother watching the movie, it's pretty lame but the special features are definitely worth watching.
