| The Match Play Diaries Hehehe, witty thread name! Anyway, today I went out before class and met someone I had played a few tournaments with. Well, we decided to have a friendly match play game. Not much at stake, beyond respect.
Started off bad. Had no warm-up either.
Hole 1: Par 5, tee shot to the rough and decent second shot. My chip came down fat and ended up with an aweful bogey. He goes 1 up
Hole 2: Par 4, another wayward tee shot and I have to punch out to safety. Bogey. He goes 2 up.
Hole 3: Par 4, a decent tee shot leaves me in the rough, but with a clear shot to the green. Well, not entirely clear, I have to work it a little around a tree. I make a good shot, put it on, and make par. Halve the hole.
Hole 4: Par 3, he hit the green and so did I, split it with two pars. It's a tough little three with water to the right, an elevated green, and thick bushes to the left.
Hole 5: Par 5, my turnaround. We both hit good tee shots and end up about 10 feet from one another. May second was pretty good, but about 30 short of the green. His was 50 short. He sends his chip-shot long which is killer on a hole like this, because of the red flag. A very steep front slope means a very fast downhill putt. I am on a downhill slope and hit the right ridge, roll it about 3 feet from the pin and knock it in for birdie. He's only 1 up.
Hole 6: Par 4, I hit a wayward shot into the bounies and he gets the fairway. I throw my weight around and somehow get it out, and then chip on leaving myself a 1 foot putt for par. He hits his GIR and 2 putts for par, we half the hole.
Hole 7: Par 4, Here's the moneymaker shot. We both hit good drives on a downhill par 4. Well, the pin is in the hardest place imagineable. A steep slope in the back left guarded by a front left bunker. It's dangerous going after it, and anything to the middle leaves a difficult putt that goes over a ridge and down a hill, so speed is tough. He plays it to the center for a safe shot, then it's my turn. At about 150 out I decide to play aggresive to the back and take out the 9. I hit it towards the center, then my draw kicks in. It's a great shot and comes down about 4 feet past the hole with some backspin to back it up. Putt in for birdie, and make it all square.
Hole 8: Par 4, long...long...long Par 4. Easily 460 with an elevated green. He hits a wayward drive into the trees after my fairway shot. I'm thinking this is my shot. I drop my approach on the green with a safe putt. He has to punch out, and then makes a beautiful shot from 100 and drops it about 8 inches from the pin. Well phooey, we half the hole.
Hole 9: Par 3. Tree lined to the right and bunkers on the left. We both hit the green and we both par.
Hole 10: Par 4, dogleg right. We both catch the fairway, both catch the green, and both 2 putt. Boring hole.
Hole 11: Par 5, dogleg left. He takes a safe shot to the middle, but I decide it's a good hole for aggresive play. I am about 35 closer to the pin because of a strong placement in the fairway. I hit on in 2, and 2 putt for birdie. He has to lay up and makes par. I go 1 up.
Hole 12: Par 3. Both on, both 2 putt. Another boring hole.
Hole 13: Par 4, a nasty totally uphill hole makes for a tough one. A disappointing bogey for me, and a bogey for him. We both ended up in a bunker, and they were wet.
Hole 14: Par 4, boring hole, good tee shots and on in 2. 2 putts for the pair of us.
Hole 15: Par 5, and a long one. I hit a beautiful tee shot and so does he. Luckily for my TS in the bag, I had that little extra umph to make it to the green, and he duffed his chip shot long. He 2 putts and pars, I 2 putt and birdie. I go 2 up.
Hole 16: The deal breaker. Downhill par 3 with water on the right, lots of trees, thick grass, and bushes to the left, a big bunker left and back, and a slopey green. Great...he knocks it in the water going for the pin to make up ground because I played mine to the center. GREAT! I 2 putt, go 3 up, and end with 3&2.
Last 2 holes are PAr 4s we both parred.
