I want to enter long driving competetions eventually but....

im not sure if I have what it takes or not. My first day at the driving range was about a week ago, I hit one ball probably around 315 yds. I know this isnt good, most of mine were around 225 yds. I have recently started swining a new way and im pretty sure I can hit the ball around 350 yds now. I havent made it to the driving range lately because I dont have a car right now and its hard to go. I am using a Dunlop club that I bought from walmart. Anyways im sore right now because I hit around 200 balls yesterday at my house.... it took all day to do that because I had to go like a mile in the woods to find all my balls lol. So that was a all day event, so im sore today and will be for like another 3 days I imagine. The thing is when I hit the ball, the ball has really really fast speed on it, everyone that watches me says its crazy how fast the balls go. The thing is my swing is horrible, but it feels good to me. Anyways I wanted to know a couple of things, does the type of club and ball you use to hit with make a big diffrence in distance? I just wanted some thoughts on what it takes to compete in long driving comps. Thanks

The world of professional long driving is highly competetitve. The top tour pros who can bomb it,JB Jolmes,Bubba watson for example, can get it out there 320 in the air,Tiger is at 310ish.Thats still about 30 to 40 yards behind the very big beasts in the long driving contests.

ok, if I can hit a ball say 360 yds then is that good? Im fairly confident I can hit 350-360. I just dont know what the requirements are for the long drive comp. Lets say one day I hit a 400 yard ball, wouldnt that mean I have potential? Im still getting my technique down, but I can make the ball move faster then anyone I know.

400 yards long and in the grid woulden't be to bad.

i think the grid is about 15 yards wide.

I read somewhere the grid was about 40 yds wide. Isnt 400 yds a potential winning drive for a long drive comp.?

I find it a little difficult to take you seriously. Its not common for a beginner at golf to aim at 400 yrd drives as soon as they have started playing.

Dave, I know I hit it at least 350 yds with a cheap walmart dunson club and a ball brand called ultra. The first day I went to the driving range I hit it well over the 250 yeard fence. My drive since then has gotton alot longer I know for a fact. I am confident I will be able to hit 400 yds soon, I just got to work on my technique and all. My friend has seen alot of golfers hit as hes been playing golf for 6 years and he said I hit the ball really hard and fast. I hit a ball yesterday that hit a tree about 125 yds away, it bounced off the tree and went straight back at us at a crazy fast speed and went like 200 yds in the opposite direction of where I hit it. Im sure this is a common thing, but yesterday I hit a ball that hit a treetop about 125 yds away and it broke off a huge limb of the tree. The woodsline is about 125 yds away from my teeoff zone, I usually clear the tree tops easily and the ball just disappears and at a very very fast speed. My friends say they have never seen anything like my hitting speed, but im not impressed with my distance. Im thinking since the speed is so good I have some potential to hit 400 yds eventually.

by the way dave, im not saying im gonna make it to the 400 yd mark anytime soon. I do know I have hit over 300 yds so far for sure, and like I said recently im pretty sure I have hit it to 350 because I went a good 10 min walk in the woods to find my last ball. It took forever to find it but I finally did, and the distance was at least 350 yds I know. Im 6'6 and 245 lbs, I know size doesnt really matter. I just got to learn how to hit it in the sweet spot and utilize my power and speed all at once.
