Thread: Windy

  1. Windy

Played in about the strongest wind I ever have today. I have a new respect for you guys across the Atlantic, playing in the wind all the time. I play low trajectory anyway but it was still hard to control. I went from hitting an 8iron over the green from around 170 to hitting back to back drivers and a SW into a 502yd. par 5. Had to try the driver off the deck. I practiced it at the range earlier in the AM. Didn't do too bad considering the not only the wind but all the leaves on the greens. I kicked the acorns aside but too many leaves to bother on a few holes.

The round I played before I went to Texas was like that. Par 3, 167 yards, I hit 3 wood and piped it. It ended up 15 yards short...

Next hole, 187 downhill (who puts back to back par 3's?) 8 iron, 10 feet right, pin high.

    Wind sucks.

I played one round in Tucumcari(Texas, I believe). Was horribly windy, the people I played with were some of the meanest bas****s I've ever played with, and the course was aweful. It was absolutely, without a doubt, the worst course(if you can call it that), I have ever played.

I was caddying for a guy who came up short with a purely struck driver on a 120 yard par 3, into the teeth of it. Next hole he bombed it 380. Gosh I love this game!

Here on the eastern edge of the Colorado Rockies we get some heavy winds when the Chinooks blow down the slopes off the Continental Divide in the fall and winter. The Chinook is a warm wind, so it's often the best time to play if you can handle the wierd things that your ball does. Some days the gusts will easily hit 50 mph.

The 15th hole on my home course is a 418 yard par 4 that plays to the west, directly into those winds. I've hit a solid driver, then a solid 3W and still been 15 yards short of the green. The next hole is a 551 yard par 5 going back the other way. Under the same conditions I've played that one with driver, 8I, and holed the remaining 10 foot putt for eagle.

    Ain't golf fun???

Yea, i know how ya feel Ezra, my round today was interesting. About 4 degrees celcius, and had to have about 30mph winds for awhile... i hit a 6 iron into a 140 yard par 3, and still came up a little short, then followed that two holes later by hitting a 290 yard 3w and a SW from 150.... Just unbelievable...

It was really funny too because the guys i played with didnt know how to play the wind, i was hitting my shots with the wind every chance the wind wasnt directly behind or agaisnt me, they just kept trying to hit the same shot again and again... Best chance your guna have is just to ride the wind and let it take your ball side to side, i see too many ppl trying REALLY hard to play under or through it, just not the best idea if you want to score imo.

I really need to get out more... all i do is play this game, albeit fairly well, and adults whove been playing more the double the amount of years (not rounds/hours) then me, im beating them by 15-30 shots (the amount i beat the ppl in my group today by...). I really need to get out and do something different for a change

As far as playing the wind, that's kind of tricky.

I do like to hit lower shots with my woods in the wind, but as far as the irons I just let it ride. Also, I expect the wind to move my ball and there isn't much you can do about it, so I play it as well.

How can you honestly avoid the wind though?
