I swing like a girl!
At least, that's the plan.
Last weekend I played the Nicklaus course at Baypoint in Panama City, Florida. I had my usual hit-and-miss round until the 12 hole when we waved a group through from the fairway. Turned out the "group" was a teenage girl and her father (at least I HOPE it was her father :emot-ange ) who was coaching her.
I was studying my ball in the rough on the right when my partner said "Wow." She had driven her ball beyond us into the middle of the fairway. I watched her hit her second shot, taking a beautiful, wide, graceful swing. Her third placed her in birdie range on the green. What struck me was that the swing seemed SO SLOW. But very successful.
I tried slowing my swing for the next few holes and managed to make a couple of pars. Then I lost my touch and forgot what I was working on.
Yesterday I went out with that girl's swing in mind. I birdied the first hole, bogied the second, parred the third, fourth and fifth, largely slowing my swing down and concentrating on making a full, wide swing with a full finish. I actually think by slowing my swing down, I gained distance and control.
Ended up shooting a best ever 38 on the front 9. Not quite as good on the back 9 due to a couple of blow-up holes. I shot 47. But an 85 is great for me.
Tempo and a full swing. I'm going to be working on these this winter.
