Thread: I swing like a girl!

  1. I swing like a girl!

    At least, that's the plan.

Last weekend I played the Nicklaus course at Baypoint in Panama City, Florida. I had my usual hit-and-miss round until the 12 hole when we waved a group through from the fairway. Turned out the "group" was a teenage girl and her father (at least I HOPE it was her father :emot-ange ) who was coaching her.

I was studying my ball in the rough on the right when my partner said "Wow." She had driven her ball beyond us into the middle of the fairway. I watched her hit her second shot, taking a beautiful, wide, graceful swing. Her third placed her in birdie range on the green. What struck me was that the swing seemed SO SLOW. But very successful.

I tried slowing my swing for the next few holes and managed to make a couple of pars. Then I lost my touch and forgot what I was working on.

Yesterday I went out with that girl's swing in mind. I birdied the first hole, bogied the second, parred the third, fourth and fifth, largely slowing my swing down and concentrating on making a full, wide swing with a full finish. I actually think by slowing my swing down, I gained distance and control.

Ended up shooting a best ever 38 on the front 9. Not quite as good on the back 9 due to a couple of blow-up holes. I shot 47. But an 85 is great for me.

Tempo and a full swing. I'm going to be working on these this winter.

And the boobs, don't forget the boobs.

It's funny how one swing thought can put you where you need to be. That lightbulb just clicks on and away you go. Then you feel so stupid afterwards realizing that the game is really simple if you wipe away alot of the cobwebs and blow some smoke in another direction.

  5. heh, I'm probably the newest guy in this place. I'm still having trouble hitting the ball, my swing is too fast (or so I'm told), and I hardly remember not to bend the right arm. Let's just say I get shown up by all types of people. Well, I'm very new so I have a lot to learn. I think your post will help

Don't wish that, you wouldn't get to play any golf, as you would spend all day at home, playing with yourself!

  9. I was playing yesterday in another round of mid-slump crappines with a kid (about 19). He was playing from the tips and I was playing from the next tees. Kid was knocking it easily 295-310 with the driver with this great, easy-looking smooth swing. Straight as a frickin' arrow. Irons were long and he hardly took a divot. Pretty good putting. Greens were really tough to read and play for all of us.

Of course, my play was all over the place. The game is so much easier when you know what direction the ball is going to go. Being in this slump, I'm back to just hoping to hit it reasonably well. I'm extremely frustrated right now.

    Suuuuuuuuuuuure it was her swing?

No, I think you are definitely on to something here. I know it was a good reminder to me, maybe I would have avoided that 6 on a par-3 when I was only +3 coming into it! I also think that it is amazing how much you can learn by just watching a good golfer play. This is why I caddy any opportunity I can. Good luck.
