Golf Training Aids

Every time I put on the Golf Channel or open a golf magazine there are ads and infomercials on different golf training aids. I am curious if anyone has tried any training aids and if they have worked for you. Some of them look like the may work while others look like a gimic.

Some are legit. First you need to identify what is wrong with your swing and see what's out there to help that. I'm a fan of the short club with the weight on the end to give the feeling of "releasing" at the bottom of the downswing correctly. Lot's of variations of that and you can make your own. I just ordered the cheaper one below.

One thing I'd watch out for is the clubs with a "training grip". I was checking out the Medicus, some weighted short thing with a ball and some hinge deal. All of them had a setup for a weak grip IMO. If I used that grip I'd be slicing the crap out of everything. Perhaps my grip is too strong, I've weakened it a bit lately but that weak would require a pro-like swing to hit straight. I had to laugh as it took me 10-15 seconds just to get my fingers in position on those grips. I think they are made more for an overlap Vardon than the interlocking I use.

I agree with the weighted club and the grip. I was thinking of buying one and having it regripped with a regular grip.

I was also interested in some of the alignement tools that are on the market but i think I could probably make one very similar to the ones that are sold for much less money.

I like the Medicus except for the grip, they weighted feels good and at very worst, is great to warm up with. As Warbird said, you need to ifnd out what is wrogn wtih your swing though, each training aid addresses a spereate problem, usually.

As far as alignment, why don't you just drop an iron pointing where you want it out on the range and use that?

I have a short weighted club that I can use anywhere. There are alot of
aids out there, Your right where do you start? I wanted something I could swing inside.

Momentus is a great aid, and just plain great to pull outta the trunk and swing a few before a round (especially early morning) to warmup.

I ended up with the AJ golf series (mom, xmas present) and it wasnt that bad i thought. It makes the swing really simple and would really help a newer/high hdcp player. But for a better player, it moreso re-inforces fundementals and simplifies what we've made complicated over the years.

IMO the medicus (hinged club) is good, but i dont want a mechanical swing, you dont have any feel with it, its just flat out mechanical moves. Id rather have a Furyk-y swing and have great feel. (personally)

I think your basic medicus, no joints, is pretty good.

I like the inside approach. The few times I used it, I made very solid contact, got the ball in the air, and straight.

Sadly I probably hit less then 20 balls using it. I just feel a little insecure about taking it to the range with me.

That may be something to consider when buying a product.

I'm glad the medicus is getting an overall okay from everybody, as I am expecting one in mail any day now.
